psu vs daisy chain

hi guys, I'm looking at getting a psu for my pedal board but I'm not sure how worth it it would be for me as I'm only playing by myself atm. I used to stack my boss DS-1 and SD-1 together and the hiss it would make was fairly incredible, is this because of the daisy chain and would the psu eliminate the hiss (bar the natural distortion hum). can anyone give me some reasons for and against on this?

thanks in advance.

Get some 9V batteries and try whether there's less noise. If not, then you don't need another PSU. If yes, you do, but in that case it could still be possible to daisy chain the devices. I did plenty of daisy chaining on my old board and it's never been an issue. But that single PSU must be a decent one, too.

Fwiw, the most important thing in order to get away with daisy chaining would possibly be not to mix analog and complexed digital devices (simple things such as, say, a single Boss DD delay seem to be no issue) or power devices in different "loops" (so to say) of your signal path, such as a drive in front of your amp and a delay in the FX loop. But even that often works and neither is the case for you anyway.

And if you still think you need a multi-out PSU, Harley Benton has their Power Plant Junior, coming with isolated outs. And with a very, very good track record.

ah awesome ty for the advice man, do the donner psus have a good rep btw?

The most important thing to look for in a PSU (aside from the amount of current it can supply) is to make sure that it has isolated outputs. Otherwise, it's just a daisy chain in a fancy box and offers zero improvements.

The main problem people run into with daisy chains is running multiple digital pedals in the chain. The clock noise from their processors 'leaks' through the power cord and is amplified by the next unit in the chain. Isolated power supplies eliminate this.

The hiss you're getting from stacking dirt pedals is most likely cause by noise from the circuit itself in the first pedal being amplified by the second pedal. Switching to batteries will confirm if this is the cause or not.
