PSA - Massdrop X Sennheiser HD 6XX On Sale $169

That's a hell of a deal, I think they are normally $220-250. It's essentially an HD660 which normally runs $400. Been really happy with mine for five years or so.

I have the 599SE's and they're brilliant. Not tried the 6XX's or 650's, but I imagine they're creamy good.

Anyone know how the different from the 600?

I have both. I've had the 6xx for about five years and got the 600 last year I think when Amazon was selling them for like $250. They are extremely close sonically, less than 5% different. The 600 has slightly more treble detail and the 660/6xx has slightly more bass. Like maybe 1 dB on either side. Build quality is the same. Highly recommend either of them.

I’ve had the 600 since 5-6 years and I actually can’t imagine buying anything else. I use them for everything at home. But then it’s safe to get 6xx if I just want an extra set. Thanks

I have the 6xx in my bedroom and 600 in my office studio area.

One thing to be aware of is how much the sound changes as the pads break down. After a couple years of use the pads compress a lot which puts the drivers closer to your ears and then makes the bass sound louder.

The 6XX/650 are great headphones to use with your modeler, as long as you can drive the 300 ohm impedance.

Afaik they should be the same as the HD650 but with a different color (navy blue..but it really looks black in most situations) and connector?

If there is an option for a longer cable, and I'd go for it. I thought I'd like the shorter one but in reality a longer one would have been preferable. At least when I ordered mine years ago there was a cable option.

New users get an extra $10 off. The $169 price might already assume that (as I'm seeing $179 now).

6xx's are a great headset ... the only ones I use. There are a bit warmer/less trebly than the 600 (based upon my research, not actual usage).

They are 300 ohm (like the 600's and many other high end cans) Some lower end devices may not have enough power in their headphone to drive them at high volumes or get the ultimate in bass response in all situations. You can generally get away with it, since they are but are fairly efficient (saving grace). If there's not enough headroom it will require some attention/tweaking (and limit/complicate things like rolling back the volume knob on your guitar).

I haven’t had issues driving the headphones personally. I don’t monitor super loud though. Rarely above conversation level. Also haven’t noticed a world of difference with a separate headphone amp.

I have the 600 and it’s my all-time favourite. I bought the 6xx and ended up selling them, didn’t like them near as much. I found them to have much less treble detail and recessed/smeary mids, almost like there was reverb on it.

However for this price, you can’t really go wrong for an extra pair.

(My 600 use is music listening, not mixing or guitar playing.)

I use them mostly for guitar but also Xbox and my MacBook (music and YouTube).
I tried close backs guitar at first but I just didn’t like that closed feeling right on the ear. The 600 feels really nice for guitar.

That’s surprising you had such a change in tone! I wonder if there were really different pads. The 58x on the other hand is very noticeably darker and less detailed.

I swapped pads and cables between the two and it was just a tiny difference.

The first 600 I got had a channel frequency imbalance so I exchanged it. Second one was great.

I really liked closed backs in a big room with lots of echo, but shifted to open backs when I moved to a smaller space.

Well, this is pretty focused listening, with favourite albums I know inside out, etc.
