I’m on a big AFD kick lately (I was 12 when it came out and I remember the feeling to this day. I pretty much wore out the cassette haha).
Got a set of Slash 2.0 Alnico II Pro. Decided to go uncovered and may as well go Zebra at that point. Shop didn’t have a reverse Zebra bridge pu though. No biggie. Not like I was going for a clone.
This is my recent ‘22 R9 in Green Lemon. I had replaced the Custombuckers with 57 Classic /57 Classic+ set as I had 2 other LPs with CBs.
Straight in to the 800 with the 57+ in the bridge I could tell the slighter hotter tone which was great as I didn’t want to use pedals for this tone.
But there was just something a bit dull about the 57s. Fantastic pickups but just too neutral almost. Although I will say the CBs get annoying after a while. Could play the 57s for hours.
So as I said, AFD kick. I was down a rabbit hole of GnR/AFD/Slash video marathon last night and after rewatching the best bits from the Gibson “Slash Collection” video I decide - I need some SD AP2Hs.
So browse the local shop sites this morning. Didn’t realize there was now a slightly hotter set of Slash pickups. The “2.0s”. I figured - perfect. My 800 is stock, not a SIR 36 or even 34 replica haha. And the purist I am for certain tones, no pedals for this. So the 2.0s seemed perfect. So down to the local shop and they indeed had a Zebra pair of Slash 2.0s.
Got home, fired up the trusty Weller and got busy. Also swapped to 11-48 EBs instead of 10-46 and tuned down/intonate to Eb.
Down to the amp cave… and right away upon plugging in, there it was! That lively, punchy, (but not overly piercing or bright) Slash tone!
Been learning the intro to “Mr. Brownstone” and these sounded perfect! So much closer than the 57s (which again aren’t bad).
Then roll the volume down to about 3 on the neck pickup to play some “My Michelle” intro. Boom! That to - super clear and no mud. Nice and jangly and nails the tone.
I’m VERY satisfied with these new pickups and of course they look KILLER in the Green Lemon!!
