Windows Is King™

I go back and forth on this thing. I think I could have a lot of fun with it actually. As for BSOD and driver management nightmares, etc., you'd obviously want to keep your install as clean and minimal as possible. If you've been running a DAW workstation on your desk for n years, and also using it to play the occasional video game, shop on Amazon, talk s*** on TGF, etc. and you haven't seen a BSOD, I can't see where you'd have any trouble keeping this running.

The real issue is that, touchscreen or no, Windows is unusable without a keyboard and mouse. (That's why the only Surface I ever owned went back after about two days.) So you'd need to have a set-and-forget mentality by the time you're packing it up for a show.

Anyway, I couldn't justify paying $1100, but I'd love to have one to tinker around with. Combining some good amp sim plugins with MIDI Guitar etc. would be great.

I fired up my laptop the other day and it offered to automatically install some "updates". I didn't realize it was going to replace Windows 10 with Windows 11. When Windows 11 booted a few minutes later (and the "Go Back" option proved ineffective), the computer was really, really slow. I spent a couple of days retuning it and got things more or less back in order, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

The teleprompter went back because of this. It's usable but any sort of context menus or anything else remotely deep kind of go by the wayside without a keyboard/mouse.

For the teleprompter; I had a keyboard with built in touchpad ready and set the computer up to sign in via PIN but there were just too many things left to chance. I was using an outboard PC with the touchscreen so many points of failure vs. single point I guess? I will probably revisit with a tablet PC of some sort that comes with a thin keyboard. Bigger than a Surface screensize AmazonExpress turd most likely.

If you can deal with a smaller screen (perhaps closer to you, i.e. clipped to the mic stand?) I'd recommend going with an iPad (or cheap Android tablet) and a specialized teleprompter/ lyrics/ setlist application instead. Turn it on, pick your set, and go.

This is what I do now. 13 year old Ipad somehow still running Adobe :sofa

So what's the objective here? Make things bigger?

This is going to sound crazy, but that same iPad with video out to any old flatscreen monitor might be easier to use. (If you can make the video out work on a 13-year old iPad, that is.)

Also: there are probably better apps for your needs than Adobe, if you want to sort by setlists, add notations, auto-scroll, etc...

I have a video adapter that works, actually. The problem for me is it's old enough that now it continually triggers me to reactivate the Ipad. Which I am guessing/assuming is a trick Apple is doing to irritate me into buying a newer device. Which most likely won't be anything running IOS? Bigger screen would be great actually.

I've kicked this around a lot the last few days. IMO, it shows the value of a purposely designed piece of hardware. My Fractal (insert whatever brand you prefer) for example. It is uniquely hardened for the demands of everything from studio work, to live shows. No, it can't run Windows. But I don't need it, or want it to. The internal software, and hardware components are assembled, and tuned specifically to create guitar and bass sounds that are good, reliable, and repeatable. Now if I imagine that the Windows pedal has similar physical hardening, that's a step in the right direction. However, you're still throwing a certain amount of overhead at managing the OS, and components that DON'T contribute to the desired result. I'm certain Fractal has this overhead as well, but it's been specifically designed (I realize this is my assumption) to minimize that overhead.

Don't get me wrong, I'm VERY interested in NAM technology and how good the sound is. And I can see a day when I will put up with the extra overhead. But I think a MacBook + low latency interface + bluetooth pedal is closer to what I would use. And yes, that CAN BE much more expensive. But the additional cost is worth it to me. Again, personal opinion.

I've been through some of those re-activation woes with an older iPad. I think I had to fix it by connecting to a PC and jumping through a bunch of hoops with iTunes. (And OMG iTunes on Windows must be punishment for something terrible I did in a past life.)

Anyway, the idea would be to use the tablet, rather than a keyboard/ touchpad to "drive" a larger monitor - something very cheap, as it wouldn't need to be a touchscreen. And then the UI as a whole tracks a little closer with the task at hand.

I can still activate it on the device itself. It's more about I don't want to track credentials on some GD Apple ID I use for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE. I've also noticed it only seems to prompt for activation when I am 15 minutes from starting the show. Probably because it's too old of a device to use for anything else ever so the only time it's on is when I need to read lyrics from it :bag
