Palmer cab sim incoming.

You are great with cab variety in a live setting. I'd think you'd feel kind of stunted with a single speaker approach? I think the best way to try it is as Billy said; live with the band through a LOUD PA.

That’s my concern, live with a band the audience will be hearing it through a loud PA, but I’ll be hearing it through IEMs.

I’ve actually been gravitating to using less cabs and even single cab IRs for some shows, I think part of me would enjoy having those options eliminated and just stick a single cab there like the old days

I’ve been curious about these for a long time. I used a Mic-no-mo for a run of shows and the sound tech said it was great in the house, and it sounded fine in wedge monitors. I’m a little skeptical if I would like it when I’m monitoring through IEMs though.

But that’s probably just coming from my own bad experiences with terrible analog speaker emulation in the past
This is a very good one. The Palmer is a bit brighter but I can't say one is better than the other. It depends on what you want.

I'm not sure about IEMs but Palmers are particularly great on wedges. Bonamassa uses them for his whole wedge sound, he even has a signature model out, which has additional midrange controls.
I had the JB version for a while but went back to the stock models since I didn't use the extra features of the JB...

I didn’t know about the JB one, that looks like it has some really useful features

It's based on a V30 4x12. Bright setting is center miked, Normal setting is edge miked, Mellow setting is edge miked with an additional treble roll-off.
Thanks. I remember reading that the rack mounted PDI-03 was the most well regarded of their line, and had different cab size emulations.

Do you happen to know if ILM and the PDI-03 JB 03 are borrowing from that original rack unit?

Yeah they're all based on the same circuit. The main difference are the features.

I've owned them all and still own the 03 and 09.

The racks:

The PDI-03 is a load box and the filter has separate separate switches for the low and high filters. That's the one EVH used..

The PGA-04 is the same as the PDI-03 but instead of switches, it has knobs for more precise control. But for some reason the 03 sounds better.

PDI-05 has the same switches of the 03. But no load and it's stereo.

PGA-05 is the same as the PDI-05 but with knobs instead of switches.

The DI boxes:

The PDI-09 has no load and a single filter control. That's the most used by pros at live concerts since it goes between the amp and cab and requires no power.

The ILM is the exact same as the PDI-09 just a different enclosure. Not sure why they even made this. Maybe they're discontinuing the 09...

The JB is the PDI-03 in DI format, without the load and with additional midrange control (the "JB switch").

I think that covers them all.

You should see my Axe III proposed signal chain :pickle
Just for the heck of it, I tried running my amp into my Suhr RL, then out to my FM9 where I applied the Dyna Cabs before going into my DAW.

Sounded excellent, but the difference was minimal between using the DynaCabs and my own IRs in my DAW that it was just an added unnecessary step. Fun nonetheless though, as @paisleywookiee would say, a Rube Goldberg fun machine.

It's nice though you can apply fractal post effects (albeit not through the loop of course)

Yeah, it’s fun. But that’s why I got out of amps. Just run this thing but load it down to so this and run it through here into the computer….easier for me to just use the Fractal.
