Lately, I’ve been looking into getting a sub to round out my setup. I’ve got a pair of Focal Shape 50s, which sound great and I have been getting good results with, but the struggle is real for accurately working the low end. After some research I came to the conclusion that the Focal Sub One would be a great match for my setup and decided to go ahead and order one. Lo and behold I go to L&M’s website, they just so happen to have a used one at my local store. Went down and snapped it up at $765 CAD, compared to $1299 brand new.

First impressions, this thing is a beast! At over 40lbs and measuring 18.75” X 11.75”X 19.75”, I was a little worried that I might not be able to get it back underneath my desk like I initially wanted. But, after some creative movement and my son learning some new words, I got it back there. Got everything hooked up, added the footswitch and then started to dial things in by ear with some reference tunes and with a pink noise wave.

After adjusting the phase and levels, I have to say this is the tits. As I mentioned, I was pretty happy with how things were sounding with my Shape 50s but adding the sub really just added so much volume to the music. I also love having the footswitch bypass, it really helped for dialing in the sub volume and I’m sure it will help with my mixes.

I think I fried my ears with yesterday’s setup but I have another go at it with fresh ears after work and see if I still need to make more adjustments.

Awesome! I really believe a sub allows your monitors to shine more, because it
takes all the load (the heaviest load for any speaker) by outsourcing them sub
frequencies, to, well, a sub.

It doesn't even need to be much. Not like we be cranking the jams to the level
that some dudes pump out of the trunks of their car. :beer

IKM, yes, that same IKM for ToneX - seem to think a sub isn't needed for their "iLoud Precision" series monitors. Have read a few reviews that concur, but sure makes me wonder!

Yes, I'm being stupid and thinking of monitors - even though I don't think there's anything wrong with my PreSonus Eris XT 5's and Sub. I just wonder if having those IKM "iLoud Precision", with the included mic and room tuning it does - would be smart or not?

Seems that @Jarick has some otw, and he seems pretty picky about monitors. Sucky part is the 5" are $100 off through today. But, hell with it, they'll be on sale again.

I think the sale goes through the end of the year according to Sweetwater...

Focal Shape 50's were on my list to try as well. I liked the Alphas at first but ultimately they were too scooped. The next level Focals are really well liked though and I love that they make their drivers in house.

Pitbull Audio has the 5's for $500, but that ends today, for what that's worth.

Tone and sound are important Dave, in all aspects, monitoring recording, listening to music though a good Hi-Fi, good headphones etc...
And yes subs are important and an integral part
So I say to thee
