Having built one and having supervised kids building a couple, I would say if you need to put the PCBs in and out multiple times, you shouldn’t be allowed to touch tools…ever.

It's appearently not a manufacturer's issue. Friend of a friend who mostly builds tubescreamer clones and knows about electronics told me that any pedal with a ribbon cable is basically safe if used in a studio while kept on a desktop, operated by hand.

Any pedal when stomped on frequently while playing live, specially some mini sized compressors are prone to failure if they have such ribbon cables inside them.

Meanwhile, you can google pictures of the PCB of any floor modeler and you are likely to see quite a few ribbon cables.

There is nothing inherent to ribbon cables that makes them unreliable, and there are many different types and connectors as well. There's like 5 different types in my Hotone Ampero 2 Stomp for example.

In a pedal there really shouldn't be much difference between using a ribbon cable for a footswitch vs using individual cables for the same connections if they are soldered on both ends.

These pedal kits seem like a lot of fun especially if that's not a pedal that you have already. Good on Josh for promoting tinkering and building and making it pretty easy and accessible.

Also the more people hate on Josh for his success, the more I like him. I was kind of neutral on him until I saw just how much the Reddit pedalboard group hated him.

Good point, although there's a special level of hatred for Josh over there lol. I have a sneaking suspicion their motivation is political/religious in nature but I'll leave it at that.

I only have two JHS pedals, both are utilities (Black Box and A/B). Was really impressed with the packaging and presentation for both of them, and they work fine though they are super basic. I'd buy more if I needed them.

Criticisms of Josh go much much further back than that. On that though he absolutely did rip off that devi ever pedal and then tried to silence her.

I don't remember the details but basically two other circuits that predated it. Keep in mind NONE of the content of any of them was protectable IP because of prior art that has been in the public domain for decades or forever. IP law allows that type of copying for good reasons.
