New JHS Kit Pedal Release Monday

Don’t see how the ribbon would effect it when on a pedalboard.?

Some ribbon cables are meant to flex over and over, like the ones in printers and scanners. Other ribbon cables have very thin, non-stranded wires inside that will break with repeated flexing.

I am not a fan of the ODS sound, but Dumble made and modded other amps as well.

Pretty wide pedal with the I/Os on the side is deserving a "boo" already, regardless whether it'll be a fine pedal. Top side connectivity is where it's at for wide pedals.

Josh cancelled the Ross program & had to recall *all* of the Ross pedals still on shelves @ $179 (which was 90+% of produced/released stock, writing-off shipping costs), then sell them @ cost-to-build $79, creating a *super genius" video campaign to *pump* the one-day-fire-sale, which worked like a charm!



Not really a JHS fanatic, but couldn't help but notice numerous muso forum postings re: issues with the NOTAKLÖN ribbon cable, which appears to be delicate & prone to assembly damage/user error, so the consensus is that it's a crap shoot if you buy an pre-built unit.

I imagine the piss & vinegar *outrage* is due to the "collectible investment" folks suddenly finding urine in their cheerios

Full disclosure: I forgot that I do have an excellent Red Llama clone w/EQ switch that I bought from Josh like 20 years ago, long before he started JHS mass produced "collectibles".

He's a marketing "genius". I agree about the resurrection and quick death of Ross pedals, that was awkward.

The Notaklon, however, is a clever idea, imho. Never heard about finicky connectors/cables though... Sounds like an uncomfortable scenario, if you ask me.

And the clones and mods that put JHS on the map back in the day? I thought they were cool.

Once owned a JHS modded EHX Satisfaction (blend knob and clipping options, iirc) that was really good on bass. Also, I really wanted to buy a JHS Emperor for a while - then I read about his homophobic church thing, and decided to invest in something else.

Notadumble? I own a Dumbloid ODS, so I have zero interest in the JHS release, but I guess it might be nice for some folks. No problem with that.

PS: He loves to polarize, that's for sure. It's all part of his "marketing" scheme.

The only people who say this sort of thing have never even been in the same room as one. It’s totally not my thing either but I have played through 5 and they are undeniably huge sounding and amazingly dynamic. Clones are not the same, they miss the most important part of why they are amazing . The fine tuning by ear he did with the artist in some cases is specific to that set of components and can’t be copied.

That’s about as cheap construction as is possible and they don’t really capture why the Klon was a success in the first place. None of the clones do with the exception of the Centura which originally had the exact same layout and components. Even the same brands with the exception of the pots . Cts in Centaur and Alpha in Centura. The original Centuras are essentially identical as any two originals .

He did that afaik because the Ross pedals didn't sell. Which came as no surprise to me because those pedals have been surpassed many times over by newer takes.

So making it a "sell it for cost" meant people will pick them up due to FOMO or just because the price is now $100 lower. At least JHS won't lose much money in that situation. It was a smart move, but there's no debacle to it. Just made a poor business decision expecting more people to be enthusiastic about the Ross brand.

In fact, I haven't bought it (never anything), but the vids are entertaining.

It's appearently not a manufacturer's issue. Friend of a friend who mostly builds tubescreamer clones and knows about electronics told me that any pedal with a ribbon cable is basically safe if used in a studio while kept on a desktop, operated by hand.

Any pedal when stomped on frequently while playing live, specially some mini sized compressors are prone to failure if they have such ribbon cables inside them.

It also depends on if they are attached via soldering versus those snap in connectors. They shouldn’t really be in a pedal made for an amateur to put together like the Notaklon. There’s really no reason for it to be more than one PCB other than a small cost savings. Being unfamiliar probably means the end user installed and uninstalled the PCBs multiple times flexing the cable or loosening it from the connector.
