Hey
So i've build a harley benton kit and modded it like billie joe back telecaster.
But when i plug it into my boss katana mini it sounds all trebly and bright and even when i put the treble on 0 on the strings still sound bright like that but i've set the pickup height (1.6cm) done the intonation scale length from 12 th fret to the the low e string saddle is 32.7cm and intonated .I've wired the pickup alright and got an A500k pot for the volume and got 10 ernie ball strings on it but i don't know what's wrong . the pickup is a fleor alnico 5 15k humbucker and should sound like this;
So i got no idea what it could be .
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks
Toby

It sounds to me like your series link is not connected, like it might inadvertently be running as a single coil. I'd first check to make sure your red and white wires from the humbucker are actually soldered together.

Hey .Thanks for your reply .Really appriciated. I've redone the wires but it's still the same . Sounds a bit like the high strings are louder than the low string but the pickup height is the same and intonation is fine . Could one coil not be working ? How do i check ? I could put another humbucker in it and see if it's the strings or the humbucker . The angle would do that would it ? Could it be the jack ?
Thanks
Toby

One other thing to check is to see if the series link might be shorting somewhere. If the exposed wires touch a ground connection like the back of a pot or a shielded cavity I think that could cause this too. I always put some electrical tape on the end of my series link to avoid this.

One way to check your pickup is to measure it with a multimeter. You look up its resistance as listed by the manufacturer, disconnect the hot and ground wires, make sure your series link is connected properly and not touching anything else, set your multimeter to 20K, place the black probe on the ground wires, and place the red on the hot wire; the display should read something close to what's listed online. If it's about half that then one coil is not being measured. Good luck!

Just a quick update. I just took it apart to try plugging it in to the amp and tapping on each pole piece to see if it worked and they did but during that the hot wire broke off from the pot and when i touched the wire the hum stopped like when you touch the metal piece on the guitar .Is that normal ? Does it mean that the hot wire is touching the ground wire ?

Would it be the cause ? when i plugged it into the amp and tapped each pole piece it made a noise equaly loud on each .
Thanks
Toby

Hey Thanks for your reply
I mesured the pickup and found that it is angled at double the amount on a strat which is weird because i put i at the same angle as the tele's pickup . Are they the same angle ?. I guess there's nothing i can do apart from cutting a new pickguard . I guess there's a lesson to be learnt from this .
Thanks again for all help . It's really appriciated

I know this wont help with the guitar, but throwing a 10 band EQ into the front of the amp will probably help some. Other than that, less bright strings, lower PU all the way down and bring them up gradually on each side, change the nut to something else, etc.
