New Friedman IR-X preamp

The Ampli-Firebox MKII smokes this IR-X Dave. Sorry sir and TGF but it’s so true IMO.

Not even F’ing close. Gonna be a collector’s item someday. I just don’t understand why it isn’t already.

I honestly can’t understand why the lowly Ampli-Firebox MKII didn’t bury these kind of products. It’s like they reached some sort of pinnacle and self imploded. Might be just me. But I am a happy me.

It might be!

I'm enjoying the IR-X now, but its really close to the Krampus model in my G11. I would have to load the same IRs into both to see just how close, but they cover the same ground.

I got the irx to use as a preamp with my tube amp and as a direct recording box. I will have to AB the zoom and IRX into my amp's return to see if the irx works better as a preamp.

I'm glad you found what works.

I've done more testing. I spent alot of time dialing in the best possible lead tone with the IRX, the best possible lead tone with the Krampus, and through the same IR they can sound nearly identical.

But... that is with the guitar volume on full. When I roll off the volume with the Krampus, it sounds grainy and it doesn't get as good low gain tones, there isn't a smooth transition, doesn't respond as well to roll off of volume.

The IRX has this special gain staging thing going on where its easy to set up three levels of gain on a channel. On the BE channel there is gain1, then gain2 (which is good for a high gain rock rhythm), and I can add a klon boost on top of that to get my lead guitar sound. I can set gain1 and gain2 to be any distance from each other. And it can all be programmed to respond via midi.

I was going to get a ToneX, but I have a feeling it will respond to volume and gain changes like the Krampus.

So now I'm 90% sure I will keep this. It does all the in between gain sounds very well. The G11 has some amps that do low and mid gain well, but not the Krampus. (It can do it, but it doesn't sound smooth like the IRX with volume rolled.)
