need some 2025 intel on non-crap attenuation.

The Hot Plate is not a resistive load. Andy Marshall addressed that question a while ago on their FB page:

I think it sounds fine on the -4 and -8db settings. Even the -12db is usable with some EQ and the deep and bright switches.
More than that, it starts to have too much of an effect on the tone/feel.
Thanks for the correction. In that case it at least doesn't resemble a speaker impedance curve like some newer attenuators can. It's been ages since I've tried one but I remember not being impressed by it. But I probably needed more attenuation than that.

The other attenuator I own besides the Fryette PS-100 is a Bluetone Loadbox and that's pretty much a classic reactive load with its resistive network and inductors for high/low impedance curve stuff. It's got simple -12, -15 and -20 dB attenuation settings so quite a lot of attenuation to start, but I find they are a pretty good selection for most 30-100W amps I've tried with it. I don't find it mangles the tone or feel of the amp even at the max attenuation.
