NDSP Quad Cortex

I would not be trusting phantom power from a modeller at the best of times tbh. I had a dedicated phantom power box on long term loan for a while and it was awesome just having it all handled externally.

Does losing power on the DI mean there’s no load connected to the amp? I’d have imagined the through would function passively regardless of power

Ugh. It's never as simple as you want.

The QC turns phantom power off at various points. And the Neve DI box requires phantom power in order for the speaker THRU to work - ergo .... if you phantom power the Neve DI box from the QC, and use the THRU connection to connect to a real cab for your load .... then the QC can result in your amp not having a load at various times. Super annoying.
Hmmm I recall a person stating their QC fried an expensive piece of gear during the early days. I believe it was over at TGP. Perhaps this is what caused it.

@TJontheRoad, if I'm not mistaken. I've got my TGP/TGF lore down pretty cold. :D

I don't know whether it was related to intermittent phantom power, though. Phantom power turning on unexpectedly is more likely to cause problems in a typical rig. What Orv has here is very specific to the peripherals he's using.

I can't remember what the whole scenario was but TJ did have a QC fry iirc.

I'm really loving the spatial effects on QC right now.

Any DI box that takes a speaker signal, meaning you can put it in between an amp and real cab, for profiling/capturing.
But do all DI boxes' loads vanish like this when phantom power is removed? If so, then NDSP has a significant design flaw on their hands.

Eeks. Am I wrong in thinking that a tube amp suddenly seeing no load is a potentially catastrophic event?
If you don't notice it, yeah you could completely destroy your output transformer, which is an expensive fix.

I emailed them about it. They're reporting it to their dev team, but also their logic is, their way protects the microphones.

Interesting. I don't know enough about the workflow to know whether leaving phantom power on would put mics at risk. If so... not a great tradeoff.

I wonder whether this is something that can be fixed in firmware either way, or whether it would require a h/w revision.
