NDSP Quad Cortex

Got another hour or so on it.

The plug is begging for a standard CE2/DC2/EM styled modulation. I like the weird variant that’s there, whatever it is, but it’s almost too off center for when you just want a standard lathering of chorus/flanger. It’s a cool experimental modulation, but it just needs one normal type to round it out.

Otherwise the effects are really fun to use. I like the vibe of the Stereo Delay, and the tape delay up front is good for the dirty mono vibe. Glitch is really cool, and it can be dialed back to something useful. It’s no Mood, but it’s a strong effort from Neural for such an atypical effect type. And really they kinda covered everything with an octave and fuzz pedals too. A lot of time those get overlooked.

The gained up stuff is just kinda what you’d expect. Still need to find the right cab pairing.

Gone through a bit of love/hate/love/hate. I think the 2 heavy amps are just dirtier/more saturated than I normally gravitate to, like I'm fighting a 5-10% fuzz that's always there. Still going through the trial and writing some riffs for it, half mixed just wanted to share-sies. The rhythm guitar is in Solo at the end so you can hear it on their own,

Nice! What cab are you using there? I’m finding the gained up stuff to be a little thin and crispy, but I think it might just be me not jiving with the cabs on the distorted amps.

Sounds killer!

Do we think NDSP could automatically have new plugins be readily available on the QC at launch but just don't want to jump the line? I can't imagine they wouldn't make them ready to go from the start

They already have jumped the line in a sense. The new plugin is an X so is on the list for conversion before some plugins that haven't been X-ed yet.

I think if you’re a young kid or uber fan really into a band or artist, these sorts of curated plugins probably resonate a lot more then to people who already have every tone known to man covered on a handful of other plugs and devices.
I'd say so too. The last NDSP plugin that excited me in any way was the Archetype Petrucci. A lot of the other signature plugins are for artists that I know of, but are "yeah that's alright" level stuff for me. Someone younger might be "Hell yeah, Misha's plugin!" and be far more excited about this new one.

At the same time, I'm super jaded about modelers at this point after owning most of them over the years. It doesn't matter to me if there's 3 amp models or 300. You can keep me happy with a good mid to high gain Marshall type tone into a 4x12 with Greenbacks. E.g Bogner Ecstacy Blue, Cornford MK50, Friedman BE, just a Marshall Plexi etc. If it's in that vein and sounds good, I'm going to likely use it 90% of the time and only venture to Fender and Vox based tones every now and then.

At some point a lot of the "ooh, this and that amp" stuff lost its luster to me. I think that's the case for a lot of users where new amp models on say Fractal result in "That's a pretty cool amp. Well, back to my 5 favorites!"

But that's supposed to be the entire point of Archetypes, right? "Here's three non-descriptive amps which will get you tones associated with artist X".

The fact that you're jaded on recent NDSP releases is precisely because they're all basically identical in features, minus very specific cases where you get one-off items (piezo amp in Petrucci, multivoicer in Henson, synth in Rabea). It's becoming a tough sell at US$150 a pop every time.

Personally, the only Archetype i've been looking forward for some time now is Townsend's. I'd love a quality plug-in version of his Ocean Machine pedals.

For sure, but like you said it does make buying the other plugins somewhat pointless. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe not.

I could probably just pick up Archetype Nolly and that would cover so much ground. I don't care about Nolly the person, but it's a good sounding and versatile plugin.

This is kind of the catch 22. They already offer EXACTLY what you want, and we still feel like we should want something else.

There’s also the fact that for high gain stuff, SO MANY recordings over the past 30 years have been 5150+Mesa cab, with Fender for cleans and Marshall for crunch. That means guitarists have grown used to that sound and all their favourite sounds in turn are the same thing.

Anything that deviates far outside of that is likely to be less appealing or would just sound weird.

I still feel like there’s room for someone to do a Recto that nails the experience, be it in an officially licensed plugin or an Archetype Townsend. Given its prominence, I don’t think it’s been tapped into as well as the 5150.

\m/ nice tune & good mix!
So far, I like the Lead amp(s) with the PD in front better for riffing.

I was hoping they’d do a licensed recto plugin, Insta buy wouldn’t even bother with a demo.
I’ll take the evil pumpkin while I wait, also an Insta buy due to how good nameless is.

I’m coming more around to the amps sounds in misha. They lack a resonance control so you have to use the master and output to balance the low end/saturation. And also for gained out stuff the precision drive can make some drastic differences to nudge in the direction you want.

The microcosm glitch pedal can also get you those kind of sounds better than anything else. The pedals are pretty much selling me on it and the amps and rest of it are a bonus. I would have personally just liked to see an invective120 in here and if it was there I would have already grabbed it. I’ll probably still get it with the loyalty discount, it’s got enough in there to keep me entertained.

I haven’t been able to listen to your clips because whenever I click the link it brings me a blank SoundCloud page lol, but I’ll try later on my Mac. The code “NOCTURNAL” may still get you 30% off btw

Similar to how I bought the Petrucci Archetype without a second thought, I would do the same for a Townsend 💯 just because they’re my favorite artists. I guess NDSP knows theirs clientele are a lot of younger dudes who love Misha and are probably doing the exact same thing. If they released an Archetype Mikael Akerfeldt I’d be fangirling that mf til the cows came home lmao (I don’t think in a thousand years he’d be interested in that and I read he doesn’t even really build his own patches, he just lets Fredrik lead the way in that regard)

No bueno on codes, you get 20% off already if you own 2 plugins so down to 100euro. Considering neural are the apple of ampsims it’s not a crazy price. I’ve spent more on pedals collecting dust and NDSP sims get most of my use, I’m turning into a commoner ew.

if they make an Archetype: Noodles, or any punk guitarist I’m bound by the code to grab it.
