NDG: 'Dad Rock' vibes

I suppose nothing screams dad rock like a 12 string acousitc.

I've planned to grab a 12 string acoustic for session use for ages. But I never got around to it for some time. I played a few of the Ibanez line and some others like a Guild and an amazing Cole Clark that I unfortunately missed out on. So for streamlining sake, I narrowed it down to the Ibbys. And of all they had available, the Artwood AW5412CE sounded the best so here we are.

I've always liked the Artwood line. Nice sounding instruments for the price range. I'm actually surprised how full this model sounded right off the gate, the way a good dreadnought body should sound. I'm actually tempted to buy a 6 string version.

My daughter calls Van Halen dad rock so you have got no chance with that.

Never owned a 12 string but what's the first song you'd play on it?

For me I'd go with "I Stay Away" by Alice in Chains!

The Tristram theme from Diablo. 😂

Then a bunch of America and Luna Sea songs, and one off my second album that used a nylon string doubled with an Irish bouzouki. 😂

I never really thought of the John Butler Trio as Dad Rock, but they probably are now.

Try Zebra.

As an Australian, I'm kind of over John Butler. 🤣 He was completely overplayed at the time so my friends and I got sick of him quickly. Which is a shame since he is a great player.

And yes, Zebra was released 20 years ago.

I agree, but 12-string accoustic made him immediately spring to my mind.

I hadn't even noticed that they no longer exist.

Funny, after my then 10 year old Daughter got a record turn table for Xmas, she raided my vinyl collection a few years back ....suddenly Billy Elish was replaced with the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy, Rush and others.
Heck, she's listening to a Mamma's and Pappas record that I got her from a Retro Record shop.

Happy NGD!

I love the way that 12 string acoustic sounds. It is one of those sounds that can make a simple part shine and there's really no effect that can replicate that sound well. The issue I've always had is that I like nice guitars and a quality 12 string isn't going to be cheap. I can't justify to myself having $2,000+ tied up in a guitar I play only on rare occasions.

If you play Hotel California on it you are officially banned!!!

I've already got an instrument for that.

And even then, I made myself write something with it rather than a cover.

...but I did do a cover using the doubleneck... and the song was Bananas and Blow by Ween. :rofl

I'm currently trying to write something using the Artwood acoustic, and hopefully I'll be avoiding some cliches.
