NAD: Boogie Lonestar Special

Never played the real thing but I’ve been so impressed with the models from Fractal, Line 6 and Neural DSP that I’ve been so tempted to grab one. Genuinely wasn’t on my radar at all until I tried emulations of them. Can imagine the real thing is even better, congrats!

Any load box suggestions? Ox Box is on sale at the moment - trying to keep the lady happy...been turning it up, haha.

Used Power Load non-IR version. Very cool thing with this box is if you just want to use the load section
it doesn't require any power. The LEVEL control and two left EQ switches work passively.

I’d primarily be using this for headphone play in the early morning or late evening; sufficient?

The headphone out has it's own dedicated stereo effects loop and ability to mix via a 3.5 stereo input.
Does require the 12V adapter for that though.

I use the passive full range 1/4" output jack only so no adapter needed.

I've been tempted to pick the Lonestar Classic combo a few times when used ones have come around. But then I remember it's pretty heavy and has a lot of low end that I remember was a bit difficult to control the few times I have played the real deal.

The Special is more tame in the lows and I think it sounds a bit better for overdrive, but I like the Classic more for cleans so you win some, you lose some.

The absolute cheapskate move from Mesa was having a jack for reverb on/off but not including the pedal on a 2000+ euro amp.

Are you saying that it’s a shame you can’t turn reverb on/off with the included pedal?

I guess I didn’t even think about that!

As far as the weight is concerned, yea, this thing is heavy as hell but I don’t care it’s fucking glorious. 🤘🏻

Yes, and the fact that Mesa didn't either have that option on the channel footswitch, or just provide another pedal to turn reverb on/off since the jack for it exists.
