I saw the video soon after it was posted..

This is important foundational stuff for all instruments.

The bit about a melody going up or down was interesting. I already ‘sing’ what I play so that connection exists for me, a little bit.

What I struggle with is: jumping around the fretboard while trying to find the notes.

I can improvise in a small box of 4-5 frets but jumping 7-8 frets to a different position throws me off.
If I have to make that kind of a leap, I have to walk it through an arpeggio line..

The equivalent of a "free jazz avangarde guy" is a "fentanyl addicted homeless person shitting down the street of San Francisco"? :rofl Last thing people associate me with is jazz. Thus, they do not know I actually love it. I have been through many real book classics when I was at music school and once scored what corresponds to an A+ in Composition and Arrangement writing a little jazz tune for synthesizer and our big bang. Thinking in boxes, if people said jazz to me, I would ask "What kind of jazz?", "Swing, Boogie woogie, Dixieland, Modal Jazz, Bebob, Hard Bob, Fusion?" And the a-theoretical but instrumentally well-trained free style avangardists would go: "What? Just Jazz, who cares what it is called? Anything goes". Well, I thought free jazz sounded exactly like that, anything put up with anything resulting in nothing. Could as well have been completely random scales played over completely random chord progressions. Jazzy sounding tetrads, yes, but with scales jumping from tonal submission to absurdity beyond any identifiable root note. Like a show off genre; "see how fast and weird I can play", but disregarding a main idea with the music, a story, a concept, a structure, a defining repetition of a theme or chorus among all the watch-me-improvisations. Well, I might just be a boring Jazz traditionalist ranting. So be it. Sorry if I am on a side track here, but the joke invoked these old associations.
