The MXR "Custom Badass '78 Distortion" is supposedly like a Robert Keely-modded BOSS DS-1 Distortion.

1978 was the year BOSS introduced the DS-1 Distortion.

Those 2 are my favorites too. Love, love the Mystic Edge, such a great pedal. I do own all 4 in this line, and each is really unique and great. Honestly, it's all I'd ever need when it comes to dirt pedals.

Btw, Vox have released a few more since the V1's. I'm considering the new one's (Smooth Impact, Fuel Injector, Power Burst and espially the Tone Sculptor) atm.

Sorry bro. I don't know or use a lot of pedals. I loved Menatone's the king, borrowed from a friend's dad for a week last year. It was my only experience with amp in a box pedals.

Yep, the Tone Sculptor has gotten my attention. I've been needing a straight-forward EQ pedal for a while now. Too bad they're not priced like the V1 line!
 
The Marshall Guv’nor is hard to beat, for more of a JCM 800 type thing! I think it may be the greatest drive pedal ever made for Hot Rod Marshall tones. I have one of the recent reissues and I adore the bloody thing.
The Barber Direct Drive is also great.
I also have the IRX and I’ve got it sounding killer…but it obviously plays a different role than just a mere pedal, as it’s a preamp with a power amp simulation and IR’s, for the few that may not know. I’m using it into a JHS Colour Box v2 (as a pseudo desk channel strip) that then goes into my recording interface. I also got it sounding killer into my lowly Katana’s return using the Katana’s power amp and speaker.

The NuTube Vox pedals aren't bad, in fact they're very good, though they are merely preamps so they really need a tube power amp or tube power amp sim and cab or IR to sound their best (in preamp mode).

I'm using a Tonex One with tube power amp captures and IR's with good success, in fact in that config within my FM3's FX Loop the Copperhead competes well with my real JCM800 preamp, my Randall MTS Super Lead, and my Rocktron Valvesonic Plexi, all full-on HV tube preamps.

Vox is on to something IMO, hope they continue to improve the line (more NuTubes which spec out close to plate starved 12AX7's), and fewer solid state devices).

The built-in cab mode is not bad imo, perfectly useable. Although I do like using Helix cabs in the Stomp -- or through Native when recording.
But often times I'll use them as a standard gain pedal hitting the front end of a tube amp or hx model. They're just really great pedals with so much to offer in a small package and the price is crazy affordable for what you get. #1 is their sound though, they really got these right imo.

Silly question, can these be used without amps like the tech21 sansamp pedals?
 
I tried the Copperhead (and some others) but wasn’t super happy with what I heard. Maybe I should try it again. I did like and keep the Vox amp version… imagine that!
 
Just ordered the Barber Direct Drive V4 in deep blue. I will find my ultimate MIAB one way or another.

And snag a JCM-900HS when I can… just because.
 
Weehbo has some excellent MIAB pedals (and some other great AITB pedals, too). Might be difficult to obtain over there (they're from Germany and it's basically an extremely small one person company).
Still meaning to get one some day (the guy has his shop like 1km from my house).

If you didn't get a sound out of it you liked then I wouldn't bother. Personally, I think it's killer.

Yep, from that series.
You can use it in 3 modes:

1. standard -- as a normal gain pedal into an amp or modeling amp
2. preamp -- which you'd want to run into an IR loader and/or a power amp and speaker cab
3. cab -- simulates a speaker cab so can be sent to a mixer or FR cab
