I just love a lot of these tones. Sunset Strip and beyond. Not just JCM-800 styles but also those surrounding it to some degree. Boosted Plexis, JCM-900’s, Brown Sound, etc.

Some of my favorites are the Carl Martin Panama (which is gorgeous in person) and the LPD Eighty7 or Eighty7 Deluxe (basically a two channel version of the OG 87). Funnily enough the Nux Fireman (Friedman style) does a respectable job at this if you crank the Tight knob and put the Bass and Treble knobs at 10:30-11 o’clock. It’s similar in a limited manner to the 87D in that you can set up an 80’s crunch and lead on one pedal. It’s also cheap and quite well built.

But enough about what I like! What pedals make you smile with how well they deliver these tones?

Skip the pics if not interested please.

This is what I was using back in those days.
Poor quality photo, but you can see it sitting on top of my JCM 800

ProCo Rat, especially if you use a TS in front of it and some medium to high output humbuckers (something in the Custom to Distortion output range wise from Duncan). The Shredmaster or Guv'nor can also work, depending on the amp. IE, a Shredmaster prefers a brighter amp/speaker, while the Guv'nor wants something a bit more neutral. A DS-1 in front of a Superlead or 800 where both are providing some gain/distortion works also. The Boss Blues Driver is overlooked, but the Super Overdrive is a classic for a reason.

In all, the options depend primarily based on whether or not you are getting the bulk of your gain from the amp with a bit more from a pedal, or if it is mainly coming from a pedal into a clean or light breakup amp sound.
