Had a great night last night!
We got there around 4pm when the doors opened and was lucky enough to snag the night specific poster. First band was starting at 6 and it wasn’t too crowded yet so was a good opportunity to grab some food and settle into our seats. It was hot but fortunately we were on the shady side (sorry
@spawnofthesith you must have been roasting!).
I never heard of Ice Nine Kills before this and checked out a playlist a few days ago just to get an idea of their music. Not my typical cup of tea, but I dug the multi genre mix and use of samples (made me think of a Metalcore Mr Bungle). It’s always a bit of a challenge coming out in broad daylight, and the sound wasn’t great (which made me nervous for what the sound was going to be for the rest of the night) but they were still pretty entertaining. I could see their stage show being fun on a more typical stage.
Limp Bizkit was a great opener. It’s funny because last time I saw them was opening for Metallica at Summer Sanitarium in SF and fans were throwing cups at Fred Durst their whole set. Not the case 20+ years later. They did a great job of being a “warm up act” to get the crowd hyped up for Metallica. I’m not sure if Wes Borland did this for the other shows but last night he was dressed up as 80’s James in a skull mask with his Explorer labeled “EET PHO” instead of “EET FUK”. Pretty hilarious. Sound was better for LP. They closed with “Break Stuff”which blew the stadium up.
Then Metallica. It’s been since Death Magnetic tour that I’ve seen them and holee fook they still got it. As soon as Ecstasy of Gold started playing I got chills. The light show from the stage setup was awesome and it had just gotten dark enough to get the full effect. They kicked it off with Creeping Death which was the perfect opener. I avoided set lists for this tour so I’d be mostly surprised. The highlight for me was Orion - that was a first seeing live. Got Harvester of Sorrow, Battery, Master of Puppets, and Sad but True so left the show pretty satisfied. There were a few flubs here and there but I am no way going to judge these dudes. They know how to put on a show and there was a great vibe. James seemed especially is a good mood joking with the band and the crowd. A+ for banter.
Getting out of Empower Field was a hot mess but was thankful we were able to catch a train home. I’m definitely tempted to grab a cheap ticket for Sunday to catch more Metallica tunes and Pantera…
