Mark V head for $1500. Good deal?

Here I Am Mirror GIF by Jeopardy!

Dude, you play trumpet out of a Flying V. You can handle a Mark V.

Ch1 is dead easy. Ch3 you mostly dial for the classic Mark high gain. Ch2 is the tricky one as all of it's modes have a thing going on.

Mark 1 mode is the most difficult and needs the graphic EQ dedicated for it to get the most out of it. Edge and Crunch can work without. Crunch is the easiest.

Atm I use preset EQ for ch3 and sliders for ch2.

It's very sensitive to tube changes too.

Download the demo of the ML Sound Lab Mark V. It’s awesome. Play around with it. Maybe do a send from your interface to the return of an amp? See how you like it?

10 minutes after setting up II C+ or IV Mode on Channel 3, ā€œdialingā€ in the 5 band EQ (just a little tap on this slider, no that was too much, tap it back, no now that’s too much, etc.) and then flipping to another channel and thinking about how you will try and gig with is amp.

Sad Leave Me Alone GIF

Also, I love the one I have and I will never sell it (again). :bag.

Fukin amp rips…

I feel, with Marks, once you get past the infinite combinations to be had with all those 'pull-knobs', it's not terribly hard to navigate.

About a year ago I tried to snag one for $1300 (mint condition though), but it had just sold, so I suppose 15 is a fairly good price.

Yes it’s a good deal you should get it

It’s really not all that complicated

I wonder if crunch is similar to the crunch mode on the Badlander? I think the mode layout makes much more sense in the context of a 3 channel amp vs putting 3 modes you want to switch between on a single channel :(

Crunch mode on mark V does not sound like crunch mode on badlander fwiw

Would you be able to tell the difference aside from variances you’ll find in a tube amp anyway?

I mean to be completely honest… an actual Mark IV at it’s sweet spot is definitely different than Mk V on mk IV mode

Mark V is much more compressed andā€manageableā€

I don’t consider that a bad thing tho

My mark IV is the only amp I’ve ever felt bottlenecked on tone in a live setting not being able to crank it where it needs to be to shine. All that said…. Mark IV when it’s cooking is fucking epic, and an entirely different experience than the Mark V

Interesting.

This is from the Mk V manual, which seems to explain the differences:

Sorry about the highlight; I was looking for any reference to the IV, and didn't realize it until I'd copy/pasted, and I'm not doing it again.

I’d have a hard time passing on a V for $1500 if it was in good shape. If you still have the Fryette LXII you might poke around for a Mesa Studio Preamp. Less complicated, does a pretty convincing IIC thing with a good power amp. Definitely a balancing act with the clean & lead though.

EDIT: JFC Nevermind. Studio Preamps are running $1400+ right now, which is absurd.
