Line6 Powercab CL Active

Hm. The Marshalls don't sound too great for my taste.

Powercab will ruin almost anything and everything. I don't like it at all. I can't believe they're doing these clips with this new product.

First off, what does it mean that when they say that these are Powercab samples? Are they micing the Powercabs?

If not, if they're using those Powercab internal speaker models, then those are the worst! Totally artificial, plasticky tones - they've always been terrible. I'm not an FRFR fan and the Powercab, to me, represents among the worst FRFR tones possible.

Yes:

These particular models are new no?

OH!

These are new Powercabs! Didn't realize that.

Looks like they loaded actual guitar speakers on these - that'll make a world of difference. Could be the internal cab models are still as bad as they were.

Everything I've ever seen tells me there are 2 paths that can actually work.

A full range cab that "guitar cab in the room" guys hate. But those who like a fully produced sound through the PA and can come to terms with that on stage.

Or a guitar cab of your choosing on stage that you can mic or send to an IR for the PA.

A neutral "guitar speaker" with various baked in EQ curves applied feels (and sounds from the clips provided). like a huge compromise.

I think so too.

If I wasn't in the FR camp, I'd do it every bit as back in the days, namely as in using a cab of the appropriate size with some speakers either being kinda allround-ish or tailored to suit a certain musical style. Worked for me over, well, decades. Nobody ever complained.
Heck, even with IRs, I'm using 2 (one only being a slight variation of the main one) ever since I switched for live playing, regardless of the musical environment.

These basically look like modified Catalyst 100's. It has the same extremely open back construction and a very similar look overall probably reusing a ton of the same parts. I would guess it's got a similar speaker with some different EQ voicings? I wonder what the price is...but a Cat 100 is $400 so these should be less as there's less stuff going on.

It'll sound just fine on its own if you don't apply any EQs or IRs on top. Just use it as a powered speaker cab and it'll sound great as is. Of course, you don't get different speaker models this way. But believe it or not, that doesn't matter as much when you're actually playing - you can always send the IR backed signal to FOH. (I know some people are going to go crazy when I say this)

Otherwise, you have to do it the Kemper Kab way which I don't think Line6 are doing here based on those terrible sound samples.

You might be right. Not sure how you know it will sound great. The sounds in the Line6 vid were meh at best.

$450 for the 1x12. Pricing doesn't make sense to me on this - build seems to be very similar to Catalyst with less features essentially - unless the build quality is more substantial or a better speaker but the specs don't really call that out.
