Let’s talk phasers

Had a Zelzah for a few days, it went back; WAY too expensive for what it is and the sounds it produces.

Phase 90 Script LED is still my #1 because it has the most balanced sweep.

I also have a block logo which I heavily modified (removed emphasis/deemphasis, depth and bias adjusted with FFT) to sound exactly like my Script but WITH the R28 feedback resistor, effectively making it a 1977-1979 Block Logo which I also really like, sounds like a more throaty Script.
I didn't like the stock modern Phase 90 Block Logo, way too distorted due to the pre/de-emphasis and very wide unmusical sweep.

Small and Bad Stones are alright but don't have the natural sweep of the Phase 90 Script

BOSS PH-3 on 4 stage is quite nice and does not deserve the bad rep, very useable phaser.

DOD 201 is a two stage phase that is way to subtle even for clean.

EVH is still shipping, I will report on it too.

Regarding the Phase 90 R28 feedback resistor mod:

To make is sound like a true Script logo you also have to remove C11 and C12, and bypass/jumper R31.
But most importantly is the fixed 1M (depth) resistor should be adjusted so the sweep range or 'depth' is matching the Script logo.

On the Script there is a 3.9M and 1M divider between the LFO and the Biasing voltage.
On the Block there is a 2.1M and 750k divider, that has a much broader sweep/swing range.
The mod needs to keep the same voltage divider ratio to have the same sweep range, it's one of the least talked about but most important part of the Block to Script mod.

A more fitting resistor inplace of 750k should be exactly 538k, I personally use a trimpot and adjust with pink noise and frequency analyzer at slowest sweep speed.

Small Stone and Phase 90 are my favourites. I have a soft spot for the TC Nova Mod pedal. I imagine those algorithms are the same ones as in the plethora series, or at least that's where they would've originated. But yeah, that Nova Mod pedal... pretty killer sounding.

We’ve been having some fun with this new Behringturd BM-13 Phaser since it arrived Saturday morning.
I really like what can be done with it not just on guitar.👌

I really liked the original Pigtronix EP-1 Envelope Phaser I had with my old analog rig... Though I did have it modified by David Koltai (the Pigtronix founder) to add a highcut knob on the back.

Now that I'm 100% Fractal I set up my preferred Phaser with a bit of envelope follower.

I wanted a phaser from the moment I first heard the intro to this back In 1971 but I didn’t know what it was back then👍

Wish I never got rid of the Small Stone I had as a teen, it was an old ass one that was beat to shit and being 15 I just didn’t really think anything from the 70’s and up would be worth much. Not sure if they are worth anything or not these days, but I should have kept it regardless.

Got the EVH90 last week for $90, I’ve turned it on like 3x for maybe 2 minutes total so far and while I’m not a big phaser guy, I REALLY dig it. Very syrupy and does more of what I want out of a Univibe where it totally surrounds the notes instead of sitting on top of them. I wish it had a Mix knob, but for the amount of use it’ll get I’m sure I’ll be just fine with it.

The EVH phaser kicks booty. It just works. I don't listen to it and go "oh I wish I could cut lows or blahblahblah". It does the thing I want a phaser to do.

Got my EVH Phase 90.

A quick playthrough and measurement tells me it's the best phase 90 MXR has to offer.
1. It has much higher headroom and doesn't distort like the Script and Block logo orange phase 90 versions.
2. It has the Script sweep range in both modes, so you get early 70s Script sound and late 70s LED-less Block logo sound with a push of a button.

Note that the late 70s Block logo sound is NOT equal to the Standard Block logo you can buy today, circuit-wise the late 70s LED-less Block logo is exactly like the early Script logo but with a feedback resistor.

That's what you get in the EVH Phase 90, two great 1970s Phase 90 sounds without the distortion.
I'll take one in orange please.

I have the MXR EVH Phase 90 and the EXH Small Stone (nano version). I have a very very slight preference for my Phase 90, but only because it excels at the slow speed stuff and seems to cut through the mix a bit better.

Got the Mooer Ninety Orange Phaser, love the sweep on it so much in Vintage mode that it ended up replacing my wah on my gigging board.

My Boss PH-3 i really want to like, but like other PH-3's, some of the modes cut out and no longer work, so I'm stuck with very limited options.

Is there anything different about the EVH if you have a Phase 90 with the script button? Any differences between them beside paint?
