Hey riffy !

No drams's - sorry for the late response ... time differences from here to the rest of the world .... firstly I shall put on my whole body fire and flame proof suit.

After years of selling and buy "all in one units" I decided to go modular digital

Here goes:-

-> Base is a Joyo RDB2 Pedal Board
-> MacBook Air M4
-> Tahoe OS
-> GigPerformer 5 Pro
-> 2 x Genome Instances for Pre and Post EFX
-> Scuffham s-Gear for Amps - runs everything internally at 8x Oversampling
-> Whole rig runs at 96k
-> Numerous other AU Plugins of choice
-> MOTU M2 for HiZ Guitar [Pic below is an older pic with my old Focusrite Solo 4th Gen]
-> Morningstar MC6 Pro + 2 x Auxilliary Midi FSW
-> Real world measured I/O latency with everything turned on is ~ 2.6 ms
-> Racks / Presets switch instantly and seamlessly
-> Full spillover
-> The Mac M4 runs Gigperformer 5 at a steady %26, and total CPU use on the M4 is less than %8
-> Used it for numerous gigs and rehearsals - both of which are basically non-stop 3 x 45 sets
-> Absolutely stable and glitch / pop / stutter free
-> Shut the lid between sets - lift the lid again and go
-> Joyo Board is compact and everything fits on it perfectly except for the Exp Pedal off to the side
-> All fits in my old Helix LT padded gig bag
-> Seee pic below of it on my desk below - shit and leads everywhere because am in between gigs.

After trying Helix Native, 8 x NDSP Demos [for "load testing" purposes] and Nembrini, Polychrome etc..., I was recommend S-Gear and it is far and away - to me - the most natural sounding and feeling Amp sim I've ever used - only about 5 amps, but man.

F.w.i.w, I've emailed Mike Scuffham directly about a few things and thoughts and he responded back in detail each time within a day or so.

If I want to change and use different plugins / sims etc..... its easy. If I want a better HiZ I/O its easy. If want more or less Midi FSW its easy. If I want a different Exp Pedal is easy. If ever I need more cpu power and juice - almost unimaginable to be honest - I sell the M4 and buy an M5 or M6 or M7 - there are zero cpu processing limitations even with the M4.

Its the Mac M4 and Gigperformer 5 Pro that makes this all possible and work

You can see now why my gut is telling me the KPA Player V2 is facing some very stiff competition which I think it will struggle against even though Im going to give it a go .... the "modularity" of this rig is good and easy and flexible - it would be very hard to beat.

Actually .... having now explained and laid it out, I'm starting to think the Player might end up on FB Marketplace much sooner than I thought :)

This is a fascinating setup especially given I have most of that gear lol

How do you like Gig Performer compared to say Main Stage?

One cool thing with a computer setup is you could potentially setup some effect sends and blend those in however you need. So rather than having everything in one plugin, you can run a plugin with your preamp effects through amp/cab, and then run post effects into effect sends setup for reverb, delay, chorus/detune, etc. You can have some consistency there and then swap out your amps, so running S-Gear or NDSP or Paradise or even Tonex for variety.

I grew up in the 1970’s in the U.K. My parents were on the older side when I was born and the food was very traditional. If you didn’t stew it, you boiled it. Back then, the reputation for the food here being awful was completely understandable. Cooking wasn’t well taught in schools either - the whole thing about food just wasn’t considered important by most people.

These days you can get excellent food (and ingredients to DIY) here - I think the good thing about what British food is these days is that it’s unapologetically begged, borrowed and stolen from everywhere else in the world and made it ours. Like our museums 😬

That's been a cool thing about global culture, it's really elevated a lot of experiences. The US is very similar, so much of our cuisine (at least my family) is variations of other cuisines and dishes.

At the end of the day it really is about enjoying the food with family IMO...which is why I get so annoyed when my wife is on her phone at dinner or my kid is being mouthy and refuses to eat.

Air fryer is love, air fryer is life.

I upgraded to a Ninja Foodi dual basket air fryer. It's pretty solid at least for side dishes. The first day I had it I made roasted potatoes in one side and broiled salmon in the other and it turned out awesome. And that was the last time I ever made a proper dish in it lol...it's mostly for French fries, chicken nuggets, and hot pockets. You can tell I have kids...

maybe even Giada too....

I used to watch her shows on TV back in the day...she's a good follow on Instagram too...

Thanks !

I did a quick look at Mainstage but it became very obvious it is nowhere near as intuitive or easy to use etc..... it has one big advantage ... its dirt cheap. But GP5 is built ground-up by current and ex-gigging musicians and is *the standard* in running complex Audio Plug and Midi Instruments live.

I spent a lot of time looking at "how to use" Mainstage [YT Video's] .... as I assumed being a Native MAC app it would be the way to go ..... and it just made no logical sense to me .... at all .... looked at one GP5 how-to video and I got it immediately

It really is worth the extra $$ ..... and it is stable as a wet rock :) like the Macbook Air M4 .... it is un-crashable.

Been on this modular digital rig now for several months and am kicking myself for not doing it earlier as I didn't realize just how powerful the M3 and M4 were ie:- ultra-low-latency audio 96k / 32 Buffer = ~ 2.6ms Oblique measured RTL and its as clean as a whistle with massive levels of overhead left touse. Im running 17 Blocks .... S-Gear, 2 x Genome for pre-post efx and other standalone pre-post effects ... GP5 %CPU max's out at around ~$26 and the M4 Macbook Air around ~%8 <-> ~%10 max.

NOTE - Genome 1.14 is great but it is still a massive CPU hog - if I remove the 2 x Genome Instances and run the equivalent efx as standalone blocks from other makers, the GP5 %26 CPU drops to around ~%15 ...... I haven bothered yet though to do this as there is just so much power there its a non-issue - and genome is rock stable - just wanted to mention it.

The amount of headroom and power still left over is astonishing.

I posted in another update that just for fun I took my normal GP5 Preset and replaced only S-Gear with a 3rd Genome Instance running 8 x Codex NAM Instances each running a full-res NAM Profile and left all of the other plugins there. 8 x NAM + 16 other blocks ..... GP5 % 80 CPU ..... M4 CPU %10 <-> ~%12.

As you say, it is fully modular for everything .. and you are not locked in to any Amp or EFX hardware or software "maker" ... and it rock solid.

I know some people here metaphorically physically throw-up at the idea of using a Laptop in place of an Axe or Stadium or QC etc.... but not only is the tech "here" .... it offers levels of power that the a.i.o units cant even get remotely close to.

I get its not for everyone, but I really do think its the sensible way of the future - i.m.h.o

Hope this helps.

PS: F.w.i.w .... I first tried a very high end Intel Laptop and it was a nightmare - buggy, unstable, days tweaking Win 11 for Audio .... total waste of time. Got the M4 - installed everything - no tweaks - done. I didn't need to but I turned off WiFi due to my OCD :)

A few of my efforts. Spend more time doing this kind of thing than playing guitar which probably explains a lot.
