It's Up- John Petrucci Interviewed By Ola

Oh wow, he was just talking about whether he's bothered by people planting themselves on his side of the stage, with arms folded, just watching every nuance, and John said it's more of- them filming with the phone. He said if he focused on it, it could be a bit unnerving.

I had to laugh, cuz at his DC solo show, I was that guy for several songs, right up front, 2nd row, practically right in front of him, for probably 3 entire songs, and parts of a couple others. But I did keep my phone down low.

But dammit, I was like in heaven!! My all-time favorite guitarist, from my all-time favorite band, is so close to me I could've reached out and touched him (even though I was also that close during SFAM, but I had only recently started to appreciate DT and JP back then; This was different!) And those amps, and that cascading delay that he was obviously using an expression pedal to modulate the mix, that glorious tone was coming straight at me...

Sorry John. Hope I wasn't annoying. :bag :rofl

Certainly beats what I did to Vai the first time I met him. I punished that poor dude.

That stuff comes with the territory at this point (people filming shows), but I can imagine, specifically in his shoes, that it can catch up with him at times. People go to a DT show expecting perfection. Hell, after the LSFNY show, a few of us were talking about the mistakes we heard that night (Petrucci coming back in during the exaggerated pause in ACOS was the only one from what I remember). Looking back, that’s absurd. Especially with how many mistakes I’ve made at live shows playing FAR less intricate music. :rofl But again, that comes with the territory of being in a band like DT.

The biggest reason I don’t film at shows is because I know there’s always some dolt that enjoys watching the show through their iphone and will have better vids than I’d make posted up before I have the desire to upload them. When cameras on phones were first a thing I did it a few times, realized they sounded f*cking terrible and quit. I was/am a huge fan of bootlegs and had a healthy collection of VHSs from the 90’s of all my favorite bands, so it had a vibe like that to it…..then YouTube got big and things changed.

What’s interesting to me now about cellphone vids is that even though people KNOW they don’t faithfully reproduce the sound of a show, you still get guys commenting on guitar tones or a band’s live mix while watching the vids. The Motley shows with John5 are a perfect example. “His amp sounds like sh*t, it all sounds like sh*t”……no sh*t, dude. You’re getting a 100,000w PA system filtered into a f*cking pinhole in a phone and playing it back on a speaker the size of a leprechaun‘s ballsack. When I cranked those same vids up on my entertainment system I could at least hear the low end filling in more but still….duh.

The annoying part of smartphones at gigs is all the people putting them high up and...holding them there for the entire damn gig. Like damn dude, you paid a lot of money to see this band and you don't even get to enjoy it because you're too busy filming it!

I usually try to park myself in front or near the mixing desk if I can because often the sound is best right there, but it's tough when you'd also like to see the band and you have a sea of phones in front of you. I'm reasonably tall at about 184 cm (~6 ft) so I can't even imagine how annoying it is for people shorter than me.

If you want to see a dude getting a dose of “My wildest dreams are coming true”, just skip to the part where Petrucci invites him to be a guest instructor at his Guitar Universe and then gives Ola some nice accolades for his efforts over the years. That was really endearing to see and as someone who had the exact same playing trajectory with Dream Theater coming into the fold and turning into a huge Petrucci nut and started practicing the 1234 4321 metronome runs for hours, right as Falling Into Infinity came out, I could just imagine what was running through his head right then.

Very stoked for Ola!

Am I the only one who thought about AC/DC when he talked about their concern of not repeating themselves when recording new material? :rofl

Had time to watch the interview and it's funny to hear an absolute legend like Petrucci say he's gone through like a lot of the stuff that I did when I was learning guitar or to struggle with the same stuff I have where you think you came up with a great riff only to find out it's basically some riff from another band (or in Petrucci's case his own previous work!).

About a decade ago I came up with a riff that I LOVED. I instantly heard all the rest of the instruments like I generally do when I’m onto something “good”, so I spent the whole night making a sh*tty demo in Garageband to send off to my bandmates. I’m texting them telling them they’re going to freak over this new riff and I have all these vocal melodies popping in my head for it, drum fills, where it’s going to go. After 3-4 hours I realized it was the “And as we wind on down this road” section of “Stairway To Heaven”.

I was equally bummed as I was amused. :ROFLMAO:
