Is there a simple tool for making impulse responses?

A sine sweep is always the best analytic signal. The Tone Match block doesn't do deconvolution. It's a dual-channel FFT analyzer that does frequency response matching. You can use it to generate an IR but it will be minimum-phase.

The length of the sweep depends upon the ambient noise. When capturing speakers the mic is so close to the speaker that any ambient noise is relatively low in amplitude so you don't need a long sweep. One second is plenty. If you are capturing a room IR then ideally you would measure the ambient noise of the room, the intensity of the sweep source and from there calculate the required sweep length.

The internal IR capture tool in the Axe-Fx works great but it won't export .wav files.

Just to make sure, the internal IR capture tool can only be used with the analog outputs and inputs, right? There is no way to route it to be used purely through USB? I had tried it before some time ago, but couldn't figure it out through USB, and that's what led me to the tone match block.

Fractal's IR capture tool is fantastic. I would love to have the option to export those to WAV files.

Alternative is to fuss around with the IR creation tool in Logic and manually trim...no thanks.

Is there a free utility to apply high and low pass filters to an IR and then save or export it?

You can just drag the WAV file into a DAW, apply EQ, and then export it.

And you could even prelisten to the results and then export it by sending a dirac impulse through the signal chain:
- Use an audiotrack with your favourite modeling plugin or record some stuff minus the cab information.
- Add an IR loading plugin and EQs and tweak away.
- When done adjusting, bypass anything before the cab and EQ stuff.
- Place a dirac IR on that track, solo it and bounce.
- Possibly trim the bounced file.

Also works well when you plan to mix cabs and consolidate them into a single IR.

Sure, these days there's dedicated plugins doing the export stuff on their own, but there's still some advances by doing it in a DAW, such as being able to mix cabs and perhaps add some sample delay to one of them (careful with that - but you're always able to listen to the results before exporting).

Fwiw, just in case someone needs dirac impulses in all common formats, here you are:

Fwiw #2: You can as well capture reverb IRs that way (should you want an IR from an algorithmic reverb), just make sure there's no dynamic stuff or modulation going on. And you could as well capture built in cabs from whatever it might be. I used that to capture a mix of a HX Native cab and one from Two Notes for my live setup (not using it anymore, but still...).

I don't have this currently installed, but I've used it before in the past. It can be used for mixing and I believe you can apply high/low cuts. I could never get the live mode to work with an Axe-FX III. I messaged the creator about it, but they never replied. Without a live mode, you can't really preview anything, but I suppose if you already know what cuts you want to apply it might be useful.

Thanks!

Update: The IR Workshop may be an older App but it works great and is exactly what I hoped for!

Still working out a few details on use but it’s pretty powerful and best of all… FREE.

👍🏻😎👍🏻

That's great to hear. I had it on my old computer, but sort of forgot about it and should probably install it again.
