Incoming new cab day - Orange PPC212 open back

Anyone here have experience making a panel to make an open back cab convertible? I trust y’all more than Google. I mostly play metal and a closed back would be my first choice, but this was a killer deal and in great shape. (Super Crush is not mine)

It's just a center panel that's open if I remember correctly? You could make a 3rd panel super easily just cutting a piece of wood slightly undersized and then tolex it orange to match. Just drill where the wood backing is and you're good to go. If you don't care about anything being removable, you could cut a piece to fill the entire back and use the existing holes

Not quite, but I built a panel to cover the hole where the amp controls were poking out on top of a Bogner combo chassis.

If you want to make it nice, you buy some orange tolex and tolex glue. In the US Mojotone sells it afaik, in the EU either Uraltone (FI) or Tube Town (DE). You can find tutorials how to apply it online. Use a staple gun to reinforce it a bit to make sure it stays put. You could even add a little strap or two to it that makes it easy to pull out if it's stuck.

Otherwise it would be literally just buying a plank of wood, making sure it fits very tight and just screw it in with wood screws.

I've owned a few convertible back cabs and the biggest difference is in low end focus and directionality. It will depend on the speakers and chassis design whether you like this or not. It helped with the Tube Town Rex cab I had with an Alnico Gold, it sounded a bit boomy when it was open and closing it helped.

I’m very excited to not be “tethered” to my loadbox and modeler for IR loading. And the volume that my studio monitors just aren’t able to really produce when the family is away and I can crank the shit out of my rig.
