Two more boosts in my collection worth mentioning, MIJ Boss (AnalogMan) GE-7 and the Spark. (ignore the Fuzz)

Boss GE-7 is the greatest of all time IMO.

I also love using a compressor as a light boost. It can tighten up the sound and add some sustain while boosting a bit

So far the Lovepedal Tchula. It's a rabbit hole waiting to happen because I want all the Tchulas now.


Strat-Tchula-Lonestar model in the AxeFX (I kick on the PastFX TD7 at the end for a sec, great combo!)

I love stacking it with other dirt pedals and depending on the situation I were in, I could easily see it being an always-on pedal.

Main boosts for me are

- Treble booster
- EP Booster
- Electra Distortion
- OCD on low peak with the gain pretty low and volume to taste.

I often use my Rothwell Hellbender as a clean boost. Drive level set at its lowest, volume cranked.

Serious note here, the Carl Martin Plexi Ranger has a treble boost side that offers boost, frequency and range (independent boost level for selected freg) plus two low cut options in addition to flat. It’s totally separate from the Plexi side) and can be triggered remotely. It sounds great! Total pedal cost is near the Laney
TI-Boost alone.

“The pre-gain Boost side of the PlexiRanger consists of two boost controls and two low-cut settings. First, the Boost knob gives you +15dB of crystal clean volume boost (something Carl does extremely well)...then you have the Frequency Boost which has two controls....Frequency to determine what frequencies are being boosted and the Range control which controls how much boost is being applied. There is also a 3-way switch which engages slight low-cut (1), heavy low-cut (2) or no low-cut (0). The Boost switch engages the Boost Channel and is indicated by a Green LED. The Boost channel works independently and can b e used a s a variable treble boost on it's own.”

I have two of the Plexi Rangers because they are that good. I think I paid less for mine than street. MF puts them on sale pretty regularly… like right now. Goes from $229 to $195 (code SHRED). They are built extremely well too and look very cool and unique IMO. 24v internally for loads of headroom.

Thr pedal had 2 x Church of Tone 50 circuits in series. The first stage does not have a gain (bias) control. It's hardwired to approximate the bias control set @ 11 o'clock. The second circuit has a traditional bias potentiometer.

Switch #1 activates the fixed biss COT50 stage, and the switch 2 adds the traditional (variable bias) COT50 stage.

Tonight’s trio. PB3 got compared to some others and did really well. Props though to others. Some are real gems. The simple but beautiful sounding CAE and the flexible Diamond are both drool worthy standouts. Nux and Sonicake getting flipped. Except for the Nux Horseman (it rocks). Cheers y’all! Jason

I continue my evaluations of boosts. One thing I discovered by accident without intending to is that if you are testing a booster that has switchable true bypass/buffer capabilities, try it in both modes even if you intended to use only one. One test model introduced quite a bit of additional noise in buffer mode while others did not. It was very quiet in true bypass.

Other news, snagged another CAR Boost/Line Driver MC-401. These things sound very, very sweet. They are also quite heavy, built well and look super great in person. Like as if Apple built a booster.

I’ll update as testing goes on….

Tonight I tested the MXR Mini Boost - EP3 pre and Micro Amp combined. Adjustable trim pot inside for the EP3 gain/color. While it was not for me, I can see a definite use for folks that have a drive pedal that needs not only a boost but a some livening up. Just a little bit on the trim pot adds the EP3 tone. Going further adds grit and gain. I preferred the trim pot low for just color and the Micro Amp clean for boosting. Beautiful brushed enclosure in a nice size that doesn’t take up a ton of space. Handsome little fellow!

Next up is the Yellow Diamond Comp/Boost, Vox Valvenergy Tone Sculptor EQ (adds tube drive as you crank master level) and the Micro Amp+. The latter two are en route.

My current boost pedal is a First Herald from Black Mass. Also does fuzz, which for my money is still better done analog. Yet to be convinced otherwise.
