I just geeked out on picks...

These Henry’s Button picks arrived earlier in a nice box with a blue light that comes on when opened .

These picks also came included wit a set of 7 strings.

Got the chance to try a Dunlop Flow 1.5 mm. Buddy of mine bought a pack when we stopped by GC on our way to Dream Theater the other night. I gave him a JP Jazz III to try (which he really liked), and he gave me one of the Flows.

Other than it's white, which makes it easier for me to see my pick angles when I'm working on dialing that in, I didn't take to it. Not as much point as the Petrucci, which affected how it felt striking the strings, and the edges aren't as rounded, which affected the attack.

Guess I'm pretty set in my ways when it comes to picks, but I'd still like to try the Jason Richardson Jazz III. (I forgot to order a pack last time I re-upped my JP's!) I think I'd like that point, and the edge bevels seem the same as the JP's.

Fwiw, gave it yet some more testruns and I really start to get along with the JP Jazz III, even for other things than single note stuff. I may in fact try it as my allday choice for a while and for the next gigs.

Here's my visual answer to this debate. I fully admit this is total nerd stuff, but it makes me happy. It's the same principal as having 10 nice guitars instead of 1 cheap guitar.

That's all fine. You're a pick nerd. Great. Especially as others can profit from your experiences.
But packaging two picks in what should usually only be used for expensive jewelry, wasting electronic components and what not - that's just plain wrong.
And yes, I'm a kinda old hippie believing that we should do our best to act more sustainable. So there. And why not?

I don't perceive any black-and-white line here. We could conserve a lot of energy and environmental resources by not having guitar gear of various different types, or making that gear more ecological in various ways, and that's valid to think about as a generality. But having a pick box with an LED is no more heinous to me than the goofy props my singer uses on stage that are only used once in a blue moon for a certain song. Or the modeler that I'm replacing in a few months when I don't really need a new modeler. Or the electricity being cumulatively used to fuel this Internet debate.

On the upside I have an electric car, and my mom said that gives me the right to freely judge other people for their habits. :grin

I don't either, but I see self lighting packaging for guitar picks as well past any grey line.

Personally, I think environmental issues need to be weighed with economics and human needs, wants and comfort etc. so I don't think everything needs to be packaged in the most environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable packaging possible. It needs to make sense and hit a reasonable balance with there being a wide range of reasonable. A box with and LED and battery that is a novelty for a few seconds doesn't make any sense to me, and I have a hard time seeing that as reasonable or responsible. That's merely my opinion, YMMV.

I have a little carved wooden pick box I got from Apollo on my desk. I keep 4 fancy casein picks in it since that's about all it fits. I like to look at it and fiddle with it while on work calls. My bandmates would give no fucks about it but to me I enjoy it. Conversely I don't care at all about fancy cars or luxury vacations. Why would anyone tell me which I should value, since it's highly personal to me specifically?

How many guitars do you own? Do you think the average non-musician would agree that it's necessary to have that many guitars or might they prefer that you only have one for environmental reasons? Can they conceptualize why it's important to you to have more than one guitar? If you don't care about picks or pick storage receptacles then can you conceptualize why a gadget like that would be cool to someone who does value those things?

Given that we're here on the Internet probably none of us are living in a hippie commune and pooping in the woods. And by that I mean that we could all find ways to improve our environmental footprint. And we should try. But it's goofy to specifically condemn a LED-lit pick box among all the excess we all enjoy every day.

That’s a rather odd definition of hippie from someone way to young for anything happening in the late 60s.

Yeah. Customers also dig eating excessive amounts of meat, customers dig traveling on cruise ships and what not. I don't.
Besides, there's things that I can at least understand (even with meat consumption and cruise ships). A pick box lighting up to display a mere two picks as if they were precious jewelry is not even close to the vicinty of the ballpark of what I could understand.
