I hate shimmer reverb

We have gospel to thank for so much of the music we listen to today. It’s still a very impressive genre. P&W feel good “god will forgive you please put a dollar in the collection tray” stuff is like a shitty imitation in my opinion.

I’m a non-Christian who plays in a P&W band so I have a funny relationship with it. I’d say musically P&W owes more to U2 and John Denver than any Gospel music.

Conceptually though it’s an old idea that music can bring about a spiritual experience. And like a lot of folks here, I’m much more moved spiritually by Gospel music. There’s a handful of P&W songs that are great, but most of it is pretty bland. However it’s nice to see people moved by the music I’m playing even if it’s not something that I connect with in the same way.

It's fine. *loads rifle*

Makes my job easier.
I THINK SHIMMER RVB can be fun when doing ambient stuff and noodling or for certain parts backgrounds but with a band live it may be lost in the wash and the effect of it wont be as pronounced maybe.

I've told you this before, but I was shot with an air rifle by crazy pikey farmers as a kid.

Haha! Me, too. Right in the buttocks. Those Catholics and their 37 children, nieces, nephews, and grandkids
were ruthless. :pitchforks

Contraception is not bad, Jesus.

They were so loose and casual with their firearms that one of the brothers shot another
brother in the face with a shotgun and killed him. "Hunting accident." :(

Yup. Once upon a time all music was liturgy and sacrament. 🙏

We do have the church to thank for creating music notation as we know it today though, so there’s that

I'm not disagreeing, but as a potentially interesting thought: I guess we could agree that music would be vastly different if there was no notation - but would it necessarily be worse?
Besides, if it wasn't for the church, I'm sure someone else would've found a way.
And fwiw, it's not 100% clear whether the first attempts of music notation really were related to religious things - but of course it's not unlikely as "organized" music used to happen most often in somewhat religious environments.

I should have added, for better or worse! I agree.

I had the same revelation (hah!). It seemed like a very foreign concept for me. Christian church is absolutely the most boring damn thing over here.
Same here in sweden as far as i know... church service is kinda slow and quiet i guess... i basically only go to church for weddings and funerals and the occasional baptism of children that seems to be "the right tradition" for everyone even if they're not a believer. Typical Sweden.... Theres no such thing as P&W in swedens mainstream church. But i do think some of the independent branches of congregations do have some forms of P&W although its nothing like American stuff.

When i came across it (like @Sascha Franck .... through the interest of pedals and Youtube) i thought "they really must like Coldplay" haha, but yeah.. U2 seem to fit also. I also thought that they must really like post-rock as there is alot of common ground with the "mid" era of post-rock... Or its the other way around... idk

In the area i live we have something really unique. I think theyre called Laestadians. They do melt in well and you wouldnt know theyre around. What signifies them is the amount of children (which is ALOT) and that they dont seem to attend birthday parties at friends and such. My kids have several classmates that is "Laestadians". Fine folks, that have their own traditions that seem very different from the swedish norm. But they melt in.
I heard from a friend theyre very restrictive with TV and screens and such and the children is raised to "work" early on. idk... theres probably many things i dont know about them.

We have them in Finland as well. They are also known for family businesses and potentially holding a lot of local power in small towns due to their networking within their own community.

Exactly this. I remember being very impressed with my sons (then 8 yo) classmate. My son being totally spoiled, doesnt know how to anything (my fault of course) while this Laestadian girl was starting up her own business, knocking doors in the rain and such things. She showed up once and had the most politest behavior I've ever witnessed in a kid. "Hello sir, is this an appropriate time for you, i hope i dont disturb you and your family. I would like to show you my business and what i can offer". And she sat at our kitchen table being all intelligent and explained how she would order some stuff and what it would cost and booked an later date on which she would deliver the stuff (idk...it was candles and some food jars or something).

I was like... wtf... told my wife that i feel like a stupid parent when theres people like that out there training their kids to become salesmen at 8 yo...
haha...

The flipside from what I've read is that they are less likely to do things by the book if they are employing family members, and other Laestadians get treated different from other customers. There's plenty of cultish behavior to them and ex-Laestadians have their own takes on it all. But that's perhaps not a topic for this forum.

You can of course take the good parts. It's worth teaching your kids valuable skills. I just told my dad the other day that I appreciate that he's taught me how to build all kinds of stuff when I was a kid, how to solder etc. All that becomes useful in surprising ways - like fixing a dodgy guitar cable.
