I've managed to aquire two identical sets of strat Pickups, identical except one set has alnico iii and the other has alnico v. I'm going to make up two pickguards tonight and then start comparing them.

I feel a little dirty.

Though if I'm honest I only really feel dirty because I'm kinda looking forward to it. :sofa

It's two sets of these

I'm going to need a £300 808 and a Klon to do this properly. Lots of letting G chords ring out and then talking about bloom. :rofl

@Eagle if my pickguard has the aluminium foil bit down at the electronics and the pots are grounded to each other that way, would you run ground wires beyween them? I checked for continuity and they're definitely all connected. I'm thinking probably not.

Correct but over time this can oxidise and not be as good as solder . I don’t add a wire on original or vintage instruments that don’t have it stock but anything else I would add it.

I personally like 2 or 3 over 5 but I have played pickups that would fool you into thinking it was different to what it was.

I'll let you know which set I prefer when I'm done. I have a hunch which set I'll like more but I'll wait and see. I might also mix and match while I have them here.

Are you going to compare with both setup at the same distance to the strings or each dialed in independently to where you think they sound best? Will you level match the output? Should you?

My guess is they will sound a little different, but both will sound good and at some point it will seem like splitting hairs.

Not sure yet. I'm hoping to finish up one set tonight and do the other set tomorrow. I'll probably start with an arbitrary height and then dial them both in to taste. I'm not trying to be overly scientific, I just want to see which set I prefer.

I'll post my Null test results at the end :sofa :rofl
