I’m recording my band Sunday.

Someone might find this interesting. This is the positional sensing MIDI data coming off the snare. 0 is center and 127 is edge, everything between is a gradient. What I learned from this image is that I need to recalibrate the snare and edrumin module because its reading almost every hit as an edge hit. Not a big deal to fix, one of the land mines to watch out for though. It's pretty cool that you can change where your drummer hits a snare after the fact.

I'll mostly be pulling these back between 0 and 30. Our drummer is pretty accurate and definitely more of a center striker. If I'm really into it I might draw the curves in so the snare hits move around in rhythmic intervals - sometimes its moving off center every other beat, or every other bar...sometimes gradually. It's crazy what you can do.

On a slightly different note, I play drums and guitar. I use a Mesa Mark V 90 combo with extension cab so I have way more volume than I need for a 11x19 room. That's fine as the 10W option on the Mesa sounds best to my ears anyhow.
I also have a TD-27 kit that I've been running straight into a DAW up to this point, or running into my desktop monitors with a sub.
But now I'm practicing in a larger space and with another drummer who I'd like to take over drum duties, and I'd like to be able to play at a moderate volume without wearing headphones.
I'm wondering if you can tell me what kind of drum amplifier is your drummer using?

We’re in headphones.

We’ve done the edrum -> wedge thing before and it’s not ideal. The drums end up feeling distant. IMO you need to either be very close to the monitors and have them cranked, or use cans. We all prefer cans.

hmmm.... that's not encouraging. I mean, I'm glad it's working out for you guys, but I was really hoping for something more encouraging. I hope that it isn't the case for all e-drums (distant feeling drums) as I have a lot invested in this kit and having a ton of different drum kits with different corresponding tones/sounds was the reason for the investment.

I’m prepping for a tracking session tomorrow night. There are some tuning/intonation things happening between the two guitars in our basics, so we’re going to take the evening to get some sounds we like and focus on getting a couple good takes.

I’ve pulled out the 2204 clone, Dual Rectifier (G), and the Mark III head. Everything’s going to hit the Suhr RL. If we get anything we REALLY love I’ll snag some NAM captures to share.

Are your presets

Klone, Reverb, Delay?

Nice

Yeah my migration back to tube amps has been accompanied by a preference for an overall more straightforward rig. I partially blame Helix for spoiling me here for years.

You can throw a dozen stomps in front of an amp in an Helix preset and experience no tone suck when they are bypassed. In the analog world even with the Klon buffer I have a 3-4 pedal max before I start getting bothered by timbral changes.

Right now I’m using the same rig I cut basic tracks with (pics earlier in thread). For tracking I might experiment more. Layering in the Mesa tones in particular could be interesting. I’ve wanted to try both the recto and Mark III in this band.

Anyway, If I’m able to get some captures there will likely be a mixture of raw amp and amp + boost/fuzz. Obviously can’t capture the time based delays and verbs.

Tracking guitars ended up being A TON of fun tonight. The Suhr RL is now an indispensable part of my workflow. I’m able to make quick decisions that I can trust, and I’m getting results I enjoy.

We started with the Rectifier. I was surprised to find that the settings I’ve been using in my living room translated through the Suhr right away. I was not expecting that at all. Honestly I’ve had a tough time recording this amp historically but the other guitarist and I both immediately liked what we were getting in modern cloned to vintage through a YA OS Mesa 4x12 mix 6. I had to pop up the gain a tough due to my other guitarist using a tele instead of the LP I had been playing.

IMG_2298.jpeg

The second track was that same tele through the Mark III and a YA blackback?? 4x12 Mix. This is almost the opposite of the rectifier sound. We dialed in a really focused upper midrange that will work as a double without eating up a ton of sonic territory.

I’m planning to retrack my guitars on this same tune later this week. Thinking I might do the 2204 and Rectifier modern mode.

I also carefully grabbed the settings, so there will be sound samples and NAM captures to share later.

It’s crazy I’m just now getting back to this. It’s been a hell of a summer with some very unexpected curveballs, but most of the drum editing is done, and I’m restarting the guitar tracking.

The SG -> Centura -> Ceriatone 2204 kills. I’m really loving where raw tones are landing.

My current project is gearing up to record a follow up to our first EP this Sunday and I thought some here might be interested in following the process. I’ll do my best to document it as we go and answer questions if they come up.

Forgive the shameless self promotion but I’m posting links to the first EP here as it will be relevant since I’m following a similar strategy as the first EP session, but making some adjustments I will document later in the hopes I’m able to overcome some of the shortcomings in that initial effort. I’ll get into that later.

The Setup:
We rehearse and record using a totally silent rig consisting of the following going straight into logic and monitored back through an Aviom system. I’m using a Presonus Quantum interface to keep latency as low as possible for our drummer:

Drums:
Roland pads and Roland/Yamaha cymbals -> edrummin10 brain -> Superior Drummer 3. This setup will not change for the upcoming session.

Guitar 1:

When rehearsing I use Helix Floor direct for everything. For the upcoming session I’ll be using Helix for fx and then running into my Superlead and Suhr RL.

Guitar 2:
This rig is typically a Tonex/HXFX hybrid for rehearsal. View attachment 39426
This is going to change over to HXFX into my Mark III into a captor.

Bass will be DI through Helix Native. Vocals are an sm58 straight in but we will overdub those later.

Goals/Improvements
Probably the most significant change coming into this session is moving away from modeled amps towards tube amps with reactive loads.

While I’m not expecting significant differences in sound quality, sending the amps in is just closer to my “get it right on the way in” ethos. I like making decisions up front where possible to avoid option paralysis later.

In a perfect world I’d also have cabs in the room so we get some real interaction with the guitars and air moving, but that’s not feasible right now.

I’ll follow up with more pics and details as I set up for the session throughout the week.

I really dig this. Really nice man.

Don’t let anyone tell you alcohol can’t solve problems. I was having a (too many) bourbon with a local friend who ended up offering me his studio’s live room for a weekend at no cost so we could track the drums. I just about fell out of my chair. Later I did fall out of the chair, but that was the bourbon.

So yeah, not only are we going to be tracking drums shortly, I still have all the multitracks from the EP in the original post. We’re going to track those drums too and likely rerelease it all together as a full length.

I’m not looking forward to editing these drums, but are our drummer is awesome and I’m excited to get his real performances on these recordings.

Thanks man, I really appreciate that.

I gotta hear it once you’re done!

Thats awesome and very generous of him! Superior and MIDI are amazing but nothing beats the real deal. A human dynamically adjusting their performance to how the actual drums sound, and emotionally communicating the music just elevates things even more.

That's good news, real drums tracked in a nice room are a big added value.

Tonight was fun.

I was tracking our other guitarist through the G Recto. Then we doubled a couple sections but added the Green Rhino or Rat with a different cab. Panned out things sounded gnarly.

That 5e3 ended up in the mix where we needed a totally different vibe in a verse. It got too farty cranked all the way but was magical around halfway up with Helix Native providing a nice subtle harmonic Trem.

Hoping to have something to share soon. We’re still figuring out the drum tracking situation.

You guys know what’s super fun? Losing 4 months worth of work to a malfunctioning Dropbox desktop agent.

Unbeknownst to me Dropbox had stopped uploading new changes to the cloud due to a file provider permissions error that also apparently decided to overwrite my local changes when it started working again.

I lost about half of my e-drum edits and most of my guitar tracks. What the fuck.

Anyway - tentative drum live room tracking session scheduled for mid October. We’re looking at 11 songs over 2 days. It’s gonna be a grind.
