I’m recording my band Sunday.

Someone might find this interesting. This is the positional sensing MIDI data coming off the snare. 0 is center and 127 is edge, everything between is a gradient. What I learned from this image is that I need to recalibrate the snare and edrumin module because its reading almost every hit as an edge hit. Not a big deal to fix, one of the land mines to watch out for though. It's pretty cool that you can change where your drummer hits a snare after the fact.

I'll mostly be pulling these back between 0 and 30. Our drummer is pretty accurate and definitely more of a center striker. If I'm really into it I might draw the curves in so the snare hits move around in rhythmic intervals - sometimes its moving off center every other beat, or every other bar...sometimes gradually. It's crazy what you can do.

On a slightly different note, I play drums and guitar. I use a Mesa Mark V 90 combo with extension cab so I have way more volume than I need for a 11x19 room. That's fine as the 10W option on the Mesa sounds best to my ears anyhow.
I also have a TD-27 kit that I've been running straight into a DAW up to this point, or running into my desktop monitors with a sub.
But now I'm practicing in a larger space and with another drummer who I'd like to take over drum duties, and I'd like to be able to play at a moderate volume without wearing headphones.
I'm wondering if you can tell me what kind of drum amplifier is your drummer using?

We’re in headphones.

We’ve done the edrum -> wedge thing before and it’s not ideal. The drums end up feeling distant. IMO you need to either be very close to the monitors and have them cranked, or use cans. We all prefer cans.

hmmm.... that's not encouraging. I mean, I'm glad it's working out for you guys, but I was really hoping for something more encouraging. I hope that it isn't the case for all e-drums (distant feeling drums) as I have a lot invested in this kit and having a ton of different drum kits with different corresponding tones/sounds was the reason for the investment.

I’m prepping for a tracking session tomorrow night. There are some tuning/intonation things happening between the two guitars in our basics, so we’re going to take the evening to get some sounds we like and focus on getting a couple good takes.

I’ve pulled out the 2204 clone, Dual Rectifier (G), and the Mark III head. Everything’s going to hit the Suhr RL. If we get anything we REALLY love I’ll snag some NAM captures to share.

Are your presets

Klone, Reverb, Delay?

Nice

Yeah my migration back to tube amps has been accompanied by a preference for an overall more straightforward rig. I partially blame Helix for spoiling me here for years.

You can throw a dozen stomps in front of an amp in an Helix preset and experience no tone suck when they are bypassed. In the analog world even with the Klon buffer I have a 3-4 pedal max before I start getting bothered by timbral changes.

Right now I’m using the same rig I cut basic tracks with (pics earlier in thread). For tracking I might experiment more. Layering in the Mesa tones in particular could be interesting. I’ve wanted to try both the recto and Mark III in this band.

Anyway, If I’m able to get some captures there will likely be a mixture of raw amp and amp + boost/fuzz. Obviously can’t capture the time based delays and verbs.

Tracking guitars ended up being A TON of fun tonight. The Suhr RL is now an indispensable part of my workflow. I’m able to make quick decisions that I can trust, and I’m getting results I enjoy.

We started with the Rectifier. I was surprised to find that the settings I’ve been using in my living room translated through the Suhr right away. I was not expecting that at all. Honestly I’ve had a tough time recording this amp historically but the other guitarist and I both immediately liked what we were getting in modern cloned to vintage through a YA OS Mesa 4x12 mix 6. I had to pop up the gain a tough due to my other guitarist using a tele instead of the LP I had been playing.

The second track was that same tele through the Mark III and a YA blackback?? 4x12 Mix. This is almost the opposite of the rectifier sound. We dialed in a really focused upper midrange that will work as a double without eating up a ton of sonic territory.

I’m planning to retrack my guitars on this same tune later this week. Thinking I might do the 2204 and Rectifier modern mode.

I also carefully grabbed the settings, so there will be sound samples and NAM captures to share later.
