Oh, it takes a certain touch for sure. You get used to it and in some ways the overall tone feels more balanced. It was a phase I went through, if I had been playing out regularly in that time then no way I'd used 8's.
I've been working with wood heavily the last few years so my hands are much stronger these days. The switch back to heavier gauge was inevitable. When I played live frequently 11's and 12's were my standard.
Billy Gibbons uses 7s, crazy. His low E string is like an A string on a regular set. He says once you adjust your touch, they're great. (I use 10-46, myself.)
@FuzzyAce brings up a good point about our tastes and preferences changing, too. It
is not always about the guitar as some kind of universal, blank canvas. Much of it is
about what we want from a guitar, and how we play.... or don't play.
