Know which notes to start and land on....In key.

You might find landing on a note (or holding a note) that is out of key doesn't usually work so well...

This is the simple explanation--- but I feel it covers "chromatics" pretty well... Understanding what a passing note is (in many cases, chromatic notes), can be very useful..

The tying a handle of harmonizing in key was simple enough in my formative years.
But what gave me a headache was harmonizing chromatic passing tones.

That said a bare minimum of harmony moves fixed that.
