Here’s some Greenback IRs (and others) I made

I checked a bunch of them out. They are the same ones which are floating around in various mixed collections. Some of them are downright horrible (likely captured with a coloring power amp, maybe even with a full "but hey, it was all clean" amp), some are decent, but sorting them possibly takes more time than their overall worth is. I slapped them into my "rather not" folder.
YES THEY are needed to go thru and weed out the poor ones sorry

Probably a bit of IR overload in the discussion now, but here are IRs of my 2021 Classic Lead 80 in the same cab as the V30 I previously shared. More lows and crunchier sounding than the V30. I gain a deeper appreciation for each speaker that I deep dive into.

https://app.box.com/s/l7dwyyglttqbsvol69ojpd5czsxqy20s

I tried to select a range of IRs that could work with both thicker and brighter amps. The IRs near the cap were selected by checking with Recto models at neutral settings. The ones farther towards the cone were selected with brighter models, like FAS Modern. The positions in the middle might work with a VH4 sim.

I assume the most typical use case is taking a dynamic mic (SM57 w/ orange handle, M201, I5, etc) and mixing it with the more niche mics.

Also if anyone still has any use for my Greenback and G12H75 sets, I updated them recently. I added a few more off-axis positions and included a few more mics. I reshot the dynamic mics at higher volumes, which thickened the IRs up. These sets had around 40 IRs each originally, and are now up to about 80 files.

I’ll post some more interesting speakers in the near future. I already shot them a while back; the files are just not sorted and renamed into something presentable at the moment:
-Weber 12A125A (Jensen P12Q-ish)
-Weber 10A125 (Jensen P10Q-ish)
-Weber Ceramic Blue Dog (Alnico Blue-ish)
-Weber Ceramic Silver Bell (Alnico Silver-ish)

I thought I’d bump this thread with some more IRs I’ve been hoarding. These are just personal experiments, but it's more fun to share.

V30 SM57 Re-done in a larger cab
I never got the sound I wanted out of my V30/CL80 speakers in my Eminence 2x12 (11.5” depth). I moved the the speakers out of that cab and into my Jet City Vertical 2x12 (14” depth) and liked the sounds much better in the room.

I made some IRs of the V30 with an SM57 (Crimson Orange mod) using different mic preamps for a few reasons:
-I thought my previous IRs of the V30 sounded bad compared to others.
-I wanted to see if what I was hearing translated into an improved micing experience.
-I wanted to see what different mic preamps topologies would offer in a normalized V30 IR.

Each mic position was done with a with different mic preamp or an alternate setting within the pre. I shot a few on-axis and off-axis mic positions near where I find the sweet spot is for tones that I like. The 2” or 2.5" on-axis IRs are my starting point. Off-axis positions are provided if the on-axis ones are too pointy sounding. I included the 1.5" and 3" positions to go a little brighter or darker respectively to adjust for different amps.

Notes about the preamps:
-Chameleon Labs 7603 - Vaguely Neve-inspired - at 300ohm and 1200ohm input impedance settings
-Stam SA73 - Neve-like preamp - at 300ohm and 1200ohm input impedance settings
-CAPI VP28 - API-ish preamp and fader circuit - 1000ohm input impedance
-Warm TB12 - CAPI CA-0252 op amp (API-ish) and Hardy 990C+ (cleaner) - 150ohm? input impedance

The speaker finally sounds like what I expect a typical V30 to sound like, although probably still different to the cherry-picked speakers that others load into high end cabs. I will probably throw my whole mic collection at this V30 and the CL80 in the Jet City cab at some point to try to milk all I can out of my current gear.

Weber Ceramic Blue Dog 1x12 IRs

The speaker is an affordable alternative to a Celestion Alnico Blue. The speaker is in an Open Back Eminence 1x12 cabinet. I thought these IRs came out very good for the tones that I like. I’ve recently used this cab to get my Vox AC15C1 to sound closer to recorded Vox tones. I initially used the Blue Dog to pair with my DIY Tweed Deluxe head.

I probably could've just made "Blue12F 1x12 OR57 1.0in 0.0in.wav" and be perfectly fine using it for all my needs. However, exploring each mic was a new color that I found a use for.

Will check them out ASAP! Not using IRs much anymore these days (the HX cabs are great and my live needs are extremely simple, the same 1-3 IRs since several years), but if I am, yours have in fact become a stable to try.

I wanted to share the progress of my IR capturing experiments. All these posts contain my whole speaker collection and it’s too many IRs for a casual observer to go care to go through. But there’s a bit of variety that could potentially be useful to someone, even if the aren’t to the standards of commercial libraries.

Warning: Long post ahead to get it all out of my system.

Over the past few months, I’ve been learning that speakers can sound very different in different enclosures, even in close mic recording contexts. My Celestions work best in my larger Jet City Vertical 2x12 for heavier rock. I’ve repurposed my thinner sounding Eminence 2x12 to use as an open back cab with my Greenback and Creamback H to explore in 2025 for lower gain tones.

For the Celestions linked below, the mic positions closest to the cap were selected to sound somewhat acceptable with thicker amp sims like Helix’s Badonk, Cali Rectifire, and Archetype Lead. The darkest IRs furthest away from the cap were selected using my Peavey 6505 and Fractal’s VH4 Ch3 model. The most typical balanced tones are somewhere in between, generally about 1.5-2” from the cap center.

The Tweedy IRs are posted in their entirety because I got lazy.

Celestion Vintage 30 in Jet City 2x12

I only made IRs of this speaker-cab combo with a modded SM57 a few months ago. This set includes a lot more microphones. The SM57 variants sounded best to me 2” from the cap either on or off-axis. Some mics like the Beyerdynamics sounded better 1” or 1.5” off the cap.

Celestion G12T-75 in Jet City 2x12

https://app.box.com/s/8hbzel6o3yj0abptlv2wysqkv0el4cft

I ended up liking how my G12T-75 sounded mic’d up a lot more than I thought I would. It is crunchier than a V30 in the upper frequencies, but has a big bottom. Blends well with the V30 IRs to my ears. I was surprised that I was getting decent sounds with the mic at the cap center, which is a position that I don’t like with any of my other Celestions.

Celestion Classic Lead 80 in Jet City 2x12

The difference between the Eminence and Jet City cabs was slightly less pronounced with the CL80 than the V30. To me, it kind of sounds like the G12T-75, but with less low mids and more high end.

Weber Ceramic Silver Bell in Eminence 1x12

https://app.box.com/s/za4dpntfj8tvmk4wngcck66w4zxby3i5

The Silver Bell was loaded into my Eminence 1x12 cabinet. It’s a ceramic take of an Celestion Alnico Silver, and a companion to the Blue Dog. The range of the speaker is very wide to my ears. Close to the cap (0-1”) works well for Vox tones, while the cone area (~4”) can work with low gain Marshall tones.

Weber 12A125A in a Tech 21 1x12

https://app.box.com/s/g7nzxlqqbkqd3muihpfl2eg2jt7ddp7j

The Weber 12A125A is a replacement for a Jensen P12Q in Tweed Deluxes. I wanted more options than the available Tweed Deluxe offerings. Working on these IRs pushed me to try as many mics as I could because I was getting so many sounds that worked for me. The speaker is little boomy in the Tech 21 cab, so a hi-pass might be needed. I started to work on this speaker in my Eminence 1x12, which thins the sound out a bit.

Weber 10A125 in a 1x10

The 10A125 is a P10Q replacement in Tweed amps. I put it into a gutted Roland Cube 60 cabinet, which I’ve used to audition 10” speakers. The speaker puts out a lot of low end, which I use for pseudo-Bassman impressions. I think it has a large range of decent tones in the same way that the Silver Bell does. It kind of works with all of the lower gain amps/sims that I throw at it.

Jensen P10R in Fender Pro Jr IV
https://app.box.com/s/ug7clo8x8hss1a08x35cf723cyfy8jmn

This speaker makes the Pro Junior sound vaguely more Marshall-y than with the Jensen and Eminence 10” speakers that I’ve tried. It has a sharp boxy sound in the room, but I really like its character in front of a mic. This is apparently the speaker that Jeff Beck has had in his touring Pro Juniors.

WGS G8C

This started out because I couldn’t find many Tweed Champ IRs to use. I kept my first amp, a Squier Champ 15 from a Strat Pack, and wanted to put it to use. This is probably the most niche sounding speaker, but I’ve had some luck pairing it with larger Tweed amps/sims. I’ve also had luck getting Julian Lage-type tones out of this speaker, a Tweed Champ circuit, and a Tele.

Fwiw, another excellent batch! Just had some fun fooling around with them (which I actually shouldn't do as I'm pretty well sorted for any situations, but then, as said, with these it's been fun...).

Thanks for checking them out.

My main goal was to make usable IRs of the Tweedy speakers for myself. Not having my V30 sounding anything remotely as good as what I already used bothered me and took me on an unexpected side quest. It’s still not as big sounding as a 4x12 but I’m happier this time.

Are most people using sweeps nowadays or dirac pulses or what?
I’ve just stuck with sine sweeps. I started with short 1-3 second sweeps, but ended up at 10 seconds.

I annoy my wife and kids about twice a minute, but have a mic on and off-axis done from cap to cone done at 0.5” (1.27cm for the international folks) intervals in about 10-15 minutes.

I think they turned out very well. And very often I'm not a fan of V30 IRs, even if I almost always got nice results from V30s in real cabs (never just on their own, though, always had them mixed with something else in my 2x12 and 4x12 cabs).

Just wanted to mention this about the Vintage 30.

I took a look at the speaker code and it looks like it is a 2012 speaker from its 10HX code, not one made around 2020. It also has a T3904A code, apparently signifying the 25th anniversary of the V30, but not sure of its significance. I don’t have enough firsthand experience to know if this particular specimen falls in the smooth or harsh spectrum of the 21st century V30 family.

Just a small detail but didn’t want to misrepresent the speaker.
