The 335 was introduced in 1958, the 345 in 1959. In the movie, Marty went back to 1955.

It was probably stolen from prop storage shortly after filming. Whoever has it either isn’t likely to come forward as the thief or has no idea the guitar they own was from the movie. I don’t see this as much more than a publicity stunt by Gibson’s top conmen.

Probably. The 40th anniversary of the original movie is this year, and I would imagine there’s going to be quite a bit of attention around it. Gibson just wants their piece of the publicity.

You are assuming Gibson actually cares if they get the exact right one. For publicity stunt purposes, a good fake is just as good as the real deal.

The ES-345 used in the movie had a solid(non-split) inlay at the 12th fret. Should be pretty easy to spot....
