I just got in a G12-65 speaker the other day. It’s minor but somewhat interesting acquisition to share. I ordered it late last year on back order through MF and it finally came.
I briefly tested with a Plexi circuit, Recto MW, and 6505 in my Jet City Vertical 2x12. The speaker kind of reminds me of the G12T75 that I have in my limited testing right out of the box. It sounds more open in the higher frequencies vs the G12T75. Perhaps it will sound different with break in.
I had always read that that the G12-65 was a dark speaker and that the Heritage version was close to the originals. My assumptions beforehand was that it might be a variation of the Greenback or Creamback M65 that I have, but I don’t hear too many similarities for now.
My Celestion journey so far:
Greenback -> V-Type -> V30 -> CL80 -> Creamback H -> G12T75 -> Creamback M -> G12-65
I don’t know much about the history of the original speakers. I did notice that it has the same vent as the Mesa Celestion Black Shadow 90. I don’t know the significance of that piece, but am curious if anyone knows anything about it. It’s got the big dust cap like a G12T75 or Classic Lead 80.
Just curious what you guys have used this speaker for. I plan on trying some modeled amps with the speaker in IR form. I’m going to try to find some pairings that sound good. I know of the JCM800/G12-65 relationship, but will be exploring others. I’ve seen fusion players use the speaker in open back 1x12s with Dumble-y amps.
