Depending upon the drum sample you use in a track, it will throw the entire mix into havoc.

Even better, drums take up the whole frequency range. The kick will make you question your bass tone while the cymbals and snare start streetfighting with guitars and vocals.

Once I have a riff/song idea I want to work on I figure out the general drum sound first then build everything off that. With the metal stuff, double bass and higher tempos, the tempo is often dictating the sound of the kit because if it's too big and the song is faster it's just a wall of shitty bass.
