Fractal Talk

Haven’t been able to play toooo much more, but yeah, still very happy with my FM9 purchase :)

For now I’ve mainly been sticking with the Fenders, and surprisingly the Tweed Deluxe, Vibro-Champ (!), and Deluxe Reverb, which are not the amps I said I was most interested in before lol. Also, really cool to take an AC-30 and up the negative feedback for a “best of both worlds” thing.

I messed around a bit with getting a Magnatone vibrato too. I love harmonic tremolo, but I couldn’t really get it there with that, but I got “close enough” with the phaser (in one of the univibe modes), which makes sense I guess. Then I saw a video that took a similar approach, but used a panner block for the stereo effect, and that works pretty nicely too!

I might attempt to make a full Twilighter Stereo patch now. I think the amp itself is more or less a tweaked Deluxe Reverb with a mid control…

And ugh the delays are so good and fun to mess with. Obviously, but yeah. I’m gonna attempt to recreate the Strymon oil can delay with a multitap later as well!

See you in 6 months when you get an AXE-FX 3 :D

Lmao hopefully not!!!!

I’m confident now that the FM3 wouldn’t haven’t been quite enough for me, and that the FM9 was the right call, but the FM9 is also more than enough for me.

If I start talking Axe-FX, somebody stop me… lol

Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Notes

31.01

. . .

Improved Amp block preamp modeling (again). This yields more accurate behavior when the amp input is pushed (e.g., when using an internal or external overdrive/boost).

I’m really curious about trying this when it trickles down to FM9! I haven’t done extensive testing of boosting the input of the amp block, and only with internal drives when I have, but I’ve been happy with this aspect so far.

I’m going in at thanksgiving dinner tonight…

FW updates on Thanksgiving. What a boss \m/

The Fractal EV-1 and EV-2 both look great (anyone have a preference between the two btw?), but I'm not sure how much I'll use it yet, so I'm looking at cheaper options (US market). I figure I can always upgrade later, if I feel the need, and can keep the cheap one as a secondary expression pedal.

I have three EV-1's. Love them. Also walk around on size 14's, so prefer to EV-2.

Wish they'd bring the silver ones back. I'd grab three more.

edit: sorry... late post. Hadn't refreshed since last night. Jackass! Still want the silvers, though. :p

@FractalAudio Anything you can say about the preamp improvements? Not expecting secrets, just very curious! I'll check the firmware tomorow. BTW, when you say you went over the amps with a fine tooth comb, did the Bogner XTC change at all???

FM9 arrived!

Got to play with it with headphones for about an hour, and have to pull myself away for now, but...

yeah, wow, it just immediately sounds good :) The presets are nice of course, first of all, but almost right away I got into making a quick preset to try some different amps. And I actually didn't get past the 5F8 into a G12H IR (I didn't wanna mess with Dynacabs yet since time was short) because it just sounded and felt so nice!

And reverbs are excellent of course! I'll definitely be overdoing them for a bit haha

Also, while I did watch a short vid on the front interface a few days ago, so I didn't go in totally cold, I've gotta say... the interface is actually pretty easy lol. No, not Helix level easy, but not TOO far off either once you get the approach. There are a few weird things, but idk I was able to pretty quickly lay out an input, drive pedal, chorus (setup as a vibrato), spring reverb, cab, and stereo reverb, and setup an envelope follower modifier to control the vibrato depth, and be off. I feel like I'll get pretty fast at it rather quickly, even though I do plan on using FM9-Edit for anything more complicated. Compared to a lot of synths I've used, it was a breeze... which tbf isn't saying much lol, but anyway.

Yeah, very happy so far!!

EDIT: oh, also it was smaller than I was expecting! I mean, I knew the measurements, but it didn't come across as bulky as I was imagining, which is cool!

I’m not a fan of dyna cabs, I can’t get them to sound as good as my favorite irs. I like having a lot of slots because I have a lot of irs and sometimes like to mix it up.

XTC fractal sims boomy as hell. But that's what I like about them; it's what I expect from these amps more or less.

I just wish Cliff had an actual 101b and did his magic with all the switched like B1 B2 , the 3 position excursion , the boost m I think he would kill it the 20th anny is a nice amp but as I have said prior 1990s Bogner Xtc 101b are the mojo

Speaking of DynaCabs, kinda surprised there isn’t one with G12H30s! Unless I’m missing it. The G12H75 in the 2x12 Chiefman is close enough with IRs, but yeah I was surprised!

I'm not a cab lineup pro. But if that is true...

Someone may be about to hold Cliff's beer! :rofl
:pickle

haha

It’s possible there’s one I’m missing. The wiki lists a few as having unknown Celestions, so maybe one of those.

And it says the 2x12 5153 Stealth “has two 12" Celestion G12H speakers, G12H EVH or G12H 30W Ann.”, but the cited source for that info just says it’s the G12H EVHs so idk

Someone with the knowledge will chime in.

Check out the York Audio MTCH pack which has a G12H30 and G12M25.

It's excellent. Not DynaCabs, but lots of good IRs in there.

lmao I'm sure he has better things to do than that!

Thanks! That seems like a great pack. I actually have and love their MRSH 412 Blackjack pack, which is of a cab with 70s G12H30s in it and sounds nice, but the blending options (and room captures etc) in this one seem cool.
