Fractal Audio Systems AM4 - Amp Modeler

That’s a shit analogy and you know it. It’s more like, damn I need a hammer with a claw on the back and this is just a wedge.

But they sell a whole line of hammers, and yes, the ones with more features cost more, are bigger, and weigh more. That shouldn't be surprising.

Both of the FMs are way too big to not have an exp attached for me, and the rack is (ew) a rack. This is like 3.5” from “Goldilocks” zone, so excuse me if I have ideas, lol.

4 switches, amp models and not relying on captures from someone else, interface. It's a no-brainer from the US pricing side of this discussion.

The interface is such a big one imo. I think the NC is really sleek and the FX sound great, but to even get full control of preset switching and FX without having to pull out your phone, you need an additional MIDI controller, which adds size and, if you don't already have one, brings the price right up into AM4 territory anyway... And with the NC not having gapless switching anymore.... and the Fractal channels feature...

That said, the NC does have a pitch effect (I think it's the poly one too iirc?), so if that is a dealbreaker like it is for some people, then that's a big plus there.

I keep trying to justify one of these as part of a larger rig with the fm9, but I think that’s going to be too cumbersome and really not add that much to what I already have. It will just take more time to program for a gig and get everything locked in together.

I still want it though. Might be just the thing as a simple travel option or something to have when the larger rig is packed up for a gig.

Maybe I just buy it and see where things go…

It's just more level.

Are you specifically wanting to add a third amp to your FM9? If not and you just want more processing power, it seems like a VP4 might be better to augment an FM9, and probably a little easier to manage presets if the external unit is just doing FX.

No need for another amp block. I laid it out both ways, and I could make the bigger rig work with either unit.

However, I wanted the am4 as a backup and travel unit, or a leave at home unit if my rig is packed up. So it makes more sense to get the am4.

In the live rig, I don’t think I gain enough to be worth it really. Adding an FC6 gives me some real utility in the live rig without making programming more time consuming. Adding additional dsp would be cool and I would put it to use, but I’m not sure I gain enough for the extra hassle it will be.
