Favorite Strap Lock solution?

I started with a set of Schallers and my second set was dunlops..

All my guitars have dunlops now.

Depending on which guitar, I used both the Dunlop Straplok and Schaller/Fender strap locks for years and am happy with both of them. They're slightly diffrent. The Schaller/Fender style has like a U shaped channel that the strap button sits in and gets locked in. The Dunlop has like a little cylindrical shaft piece that goes into and locks into the hole in the strap button. I like those two equally about the same.

Loxx is my favorite. They are annoyingly expensive for what they are (basically smaller boat hood snap-ons), but they are 100% maintenance free after installation. I've got them on most of my guitars. I think they don't look that nice on singlecut guitars aesthetically somehow.

I hate Schaller:
  • They require constant tightening or Locktite.
  • They fit poorly on thick straps.
  • They squeek when moving around.
  • The pin does not hold that securely.
  • The screws included are the wrong size for 100% of guitars out there.

I've never had to locktite my Schaller strap locks to get them to stay on. I tighten them onto the strap with a ratchet and they have been solid for years on end. I do occasionally (maybe 1x a year?) have to re-snug the screw that attaches the button to the guitar body.

They do squeek a bit. My solution has been to apply a light coating of white lithium grease to the mating surfaces. No more squeak (but they do still chatter).

I do agree that the included screws are useless. However, the main reason that I stick with the old style Schaller locks is that they allow you to use your own screw. This makes it so that I can attach the button to the guitar with a screw of the same diameter and thread pitch as the stock screw thus causing no irreversible modification to the guitar. The new S-lock models have the screw and button as a single piece. I get that this design is in some ways superior, but I don't want to be stuck with only one size of screw for every guitar.

They work really well but look terrible .
S Locks fix all your issues with Schaller.

I've been using these for the last 10 years:

They lock onto any strap button with no modification to the guitars. Hundreds of shows and zero issues.

I agree they are not the prettiest.

S-Lock is just putting lipstick on a pig IMO. Not buying Schaller straplocks ever again unless they overhaul their design.

S lock is different. Fixing all the issues you mentioned.

I've been using shaller straplocks since the 90s and I have installed them in all the guitars I own and owned (but one)

But then I've discovered these D'addario dual lock things and they are brilliant!
I use these in my 57 Les Paul reissue.

I won't revert all my guitars to their original state but If I could go back in time I won't install shallers anymore.
