Digital Igloo (Eric Klein, YGG)

You mean like the Fender Mustang Micro? ;-).
As much as I love Fender (own a Jazzmaster and Bass VI and friends work there), they make more money on branded clothing than many MI companies do total. Much of their output is commodity.

Although Yamaha Music is technically the largest MI company in the world, YGG is still a separate entity and we don't have the resources or the desire to promote mass market consumer products. Although we have a few things cooking at lower price points, we don't expect soccer moms to buy 'em for their 12-year-olds or anything.

I say, give em soccer moms something Line 6 that they need.. the kids are meh... the moms needs are more important.
May give them different kind of attention at the kids practice.... may be a good thing hahaha

Hi Digital Igloo and forumers, what if Line6 next gen machine was inspired by a powerful hardware like Mod Dwarf and its "Quad Core ARM A35 CPU at 1.3GHz, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage" ?
https://mod.audio/dwarf/

Like Pocket POD, which still sells, but with POD Go modeling? The über cheap and portable market is difficult for non-commodity-based companies to push down into—especially with an army of well-paid engineers who live in California—but we've definitely tossed ideas around. I have design docs.
I’ve wanted to ask this forever: How can Line 6 in good conscience continue to promote and sell the Pocket Pod without providing any software updates or any updated drivers since 2009? I spent good money on what is essentially an abandoned product. I can’t find anywhere on Line 6’s product page where it mentions software or drivers. Line 6 Monkey? Outdated and useless.

I get that firmware updates may not be forthcoming but, I should at least be able to get software and driver updates that will run on modern computers with modern operating systems.

Powerfull hardware is probably the least concern. Sure that new modeling requires more power, but overpowering doesn’t really help. (Well… it does maybe… but….)

Mod dwarf is a computer with plugins. My guess it really isn’t “optimized” in the same way a dedicated modeler is.

One could argue that’s where hardware modeler needs to go or “that’s what they are”. Computer with software… but still. It’s about optimization and making the hardware do specific things which probably results in better performance in the longevity term.

I think a decent comparison would be gaming consoles vs gaming Pc. You may disagree with me… everyone got their opinions. Hardware modelers being like the console, Pc being… open to several different uses but never optimized for a specific task.

Ohhh I don’t know man… I bet @Digital Igloo is better at explaining that part than a dumb nut like me having theories about subject like this.

AFAIK, It's a very layered design with inherent latency and not a true RTOS.

Latency is 8ms which is on the high end (especially if you have other digital pedals, wireless, DSP in monitors, etc.)

Love the idea of a modeler that you use as a dev platform, add your own plugins, or extend with new features and improve the UI. Not sure how well the Mod dwarf supports this in practice.

Pocket pod is a mature and finished product, if you decide to buy it without knowing what it does, or its limits you shouldn't blame the company... they will sleep easy! (l6 does not promise lifetime updates, they will only update the software to keep a certain product attractive and produce new sales, not to make those of us who bought in 2015 happy!

That's a fair point ... up to the point where the features that once worked stop working (e.g., software/drivers no longer run on current versions of the operating system and there's not a plan to fix that within a few months).

IMHO, that type of issue deserves to be called out by the vendor if they continue to sell it. At that point, they are selling a product that is limited/partially broken from the published set of features. They have no obligation to o keep on supporting the device, but if you're still selling it, it is on the seller to disclose what's no longer working. That's beyond "buyer beware" and is exactly why we buy products from trusted brands like Line6.

This is utter nonsense. I’m not asking for updates to the product itself that include new features. If the company is still actively selling the product, I as the customer, should be able to reasonably expect that they provide relevant software and drive updates to keep the device functional.

Pocket POD isn’t the only example of Line 6 dropping the ball in support of their products. Don’t get me started on the software and driver support for Variax. There is no reason at all for me to have to install vmWare to install an old version of MacOS Catalina so that Line 6 Monkey can find and offer the latest available firmware for my JTV-59. Again, if you are still selling the product, SUPPORT IT, or otherwise discontinue it.

You should also be upset with mac compatibility. I've connected old pods to windows 10/11 without problems... I don't know if it's the responsibility of mac, l6 or both... but you're very right in the aspect you mention...

That’s nice that you now agree with me but, I really wanted to see how someone from Line 6 would answer as to why they continue sell products that are unsupported by current operating systems.

Since I’m venting while I’m at it, is there anyone you can influence to make a change to Line 6’s forum? Is it really necessary to have these same five headers to appear on every forum page? It takes up half the screen. (See the attached screen shot.) It’s a bit ridiculous and annoying to have to keep scrolling past this on every single page.

Use uBlock Origin. Add this filter snippet to the filter rules in the My Filters tab:

Don't think uBlock Origin is available for Safari though, so you'd have to browse using Firefox 🤷‍♂️
