Deep Dive into Adam Jones's Tones

I was toying with the idea of pairing my SV20 with a DRECT'd SYN20-IR and playing into a stereo 2x12 like I was Adam Jones Jr. But man, a Badlander kinda does both at once, doesn't it?

there was a thing recently where they had an amp setup for people to mess with. I think it was an AJ meet and greet at Gibson Garage or something? But they had a Badlander setup there along with one of his newer sig LPs. An Epiphone iirc but I could be mistaken on that.

Edit: out of curiosity, what do you set your EQ at for that? And what cab/speakers?
Really, just crunch at 3pm. Mids at 9 o clock because as bedroom volumes, theres a serious thwack sound once you go past 11 o clock. Presence and treble around 1 o clock. if it gets too harsh, pull treble first - a little backwards, i know.

Start from there, and then dial to taste.

Cab hasn't mattered. have a 2x12 vert mesa and a 1960AV.

Separately, recently got a multiwatt dual rec - I get why people feel the badlander is lacking, but good lord is the badlander so much easier to work with. Every tone is great right out of the box. the MWDR on the other hand is like that hot girlfriend you're just always irritated with but you keep up with her bs cuz she does that one thing really well.

absolutely swathes of recto from the start of this.

Sounds like the Marshall features more as the song goes on and particularly the single tracked centre panned stuff.

The middle section of Stinkfist is so “Marshall” sounding and so much of Euology is just undeniably Rectifier

Funny enough, these are the two songs I play the most. So yeah, getting this vibe is a goal of mine. Closest I can get now is a Revv G3 pedal into my SV20 high normal channel, w/ both low channels jumped. Sounds great, but tweaking the high treble channel volume around the bright cap is fiddly and annoying. I'm ready for an easier solution.

Well, I got a week to brush up on Jones Tones while I learn-

Stinkfist
46&2
Lateralus
Intolerance
Jambi
The Pot
Ticks And Leaches
Opiate
Hooker With A Penis
H.

I saw an ad for a Tool tribute and figured I'd see what the deal was, dude sounds legit on the phone so we'll see how it goes. Already have a drummer/bassist, I'll fill in vocals until we find someone, but man.....that's going to be some tricky shit. I'm going to have to learn how to breath in poly-rhythms. :rofl

Most importantly, I get to play REALLY fucking loud!!!

I'm going over tunes now, it's pretty funny how 'cranked Marshall tube section' + Les Paul gets you in the ballpark by itself.

I know I'll use my Plexi50 as the main amp in my rig for this tribute band, I'm contemplating how much more complicated I want to make things because outside of my Electra Dyne and 5153, I also have my FM9 and the Valeton and various power amps. I'm not buying a Diezel, that's for damn sure.

FM-9 will cover the diezel and recto tones nicely. Just about finding the right IR’s really, and of course BF-2

If I were to sing and play guitar simultaneously in a Tool tribute band, I’d probably make mistakes big enough that my last 17 hours of tone tweaking to get those AJ tones would go unnoticed by the crowd…

I wouldn't even be able to think about the vocals while playing this!

I agreed at first, but now I'm seeing how much of the vocal line is following the guitar part, albeit some syllables here and there. This whole section practically IS the guitar part with some chunks removed, but almost every word starts when a note is being picked, which is like half the battle.

Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent
Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo

Got lemon juice up in your eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must have been high-high
You must have been high-high

I’d pay to see Rosetta Stoned performed as a 3 piece

2dors full rig nam captures of the Vh4 and the new Jose Plexi with the Marshall cab do the best digital live AJ sounds around imo

That Jose is a gnarly amp for real.

That actually wouldn't be too bad on account of being able to mutter whatever the hell I wanted and in a live setting, as I'm quite sure that's what Maynard does. :rofl It chills out when the actual singing comes in. I almost flew out of my seat when I saw them do that one in '07, for some reason I didn't think that'd be one they'd bother playing live.

I wish the Fryette PS100 were a stereo power amp, because I'd pair my Plexi50 with the Valeton running a Diezel cap and put each into their own cab. I suppose I could always slave my 5153 head.

Hahahah I started going down a gear rabbit hole, but I already have my rig setup for at least this week-

Petrucci Wah - Friedman BE-OD Deluxe - VP4 - Plexi50 w/Hot Mod - Fryette PS100

I'm going to use the lower gain channel on the BE-OD in place of the Micro Amp and the higher gain side for the more modern/high gain tones....though I'm pretty stoked with the Plexi50 on it's own and would be fine doing everything with just that.

The BBF Flanger in the VP4 is doing the trick for now, as are the delays, but if this project actually does something I'll certainly grab the actual pedals....all $350 worth of them. :rofl I gotta see if I can use the trim pots in the Petrucci wah to recreate the 535 setting.

The hard part about this will be 'practicing' the feedback sections when I can't crank up loud enough to get feedback.

That was the first thing I was wondering about when you texted me.

Reminds me of Petrucci trying, and most always failing, to recreate the feedback in the intro to As I Am, live.
