Psst. The natural compression on the 1987X is
wonderful.
Just sayin'!
I've spent my morning warming up with it before I go into chugga land for the Do Something challenge. Non-jumped today and I think I prefer it this way because I have enough dirt pedals to stick in front for dirt and get FAR more versatility out of it that way. I need to know more about circuit design to understand how the '68 mod makes it different from other amps.
Ceriatone offers 5 flavors of the '87x-
’67 = shared cathode, “bass” tonestack, soft filtering. Big and creamy.
’68 = split cathode, “lead” tonestack, soft filtering. Brown.
’69 = split cathode, “lead” tonestack, medium filtering. Still brown, but more firm.
’70 = split cathode, “lead” tonestack, heavy filtering. Crunchy, percussive.
’73 = split cathode, “lead” tonestack, heavy filtering. Bright, percussive, quick transition to breakup
I wouldn't mind having it cleaner in general, but I'm not familiar enough with the circuit to know if that's just the 50-watt aspect or the specific year-mod. There's a good chance I'm going to grab the PCB from
@Burger and really mod the shit out of it because he got his right around my 'perfect Marshall' tone area and I really wouldn't need a single dirt pedal to use with it due to all the modes it adds.
Edit- Sorry for the derail! Here's more Gilmour-
