FWIW I had a blast living in what was considered the third world during part of my early childhood. Highly recommend![]()
The hotpot places were kickass.I’ve never been in to China but my dad went several times when I was growing up (amongst many other varying “world level” countries and the cuisine stories were always a blast

So?Pretty much a non sequiter, but I have a deep desire to visit Thailand mainly for the cuisine… (scenarie a bonus too) but unfortunately some questjons get raised about a single white male traveling to Thailand on vacation![]()
Yes it was very interesting.Have you?
Edited for feel free to post this elsewhere.
Sketchiest coming from Germany in the 80s for me was Watts after midnight, and being in East LA on a Sunday afternoon.Another non sequiter, I’m certainly no globe trotter but I’ve been fairly lucky to travel (and even live) certain parts of the globe outside the US
I realize they’ve had some economic downturn, but by far the absolute sketchiest place I’ve visited outside the US was Athens. SUBSTANTIALLY more sketch than any third world country I’ve visited/lived in
My guide warned me what to avoid. The food I had was excellent. It was actually grilled shrimp that did me in the worst, followed by a weirdly colored “hamburger”. The duck was so gross it made me gag, but it didn’t make sick.
China is nothing like the US.
Just look for the state with the most human rights abuses

Funnily enough the only times I ever got sick from food in India was in high end hotels.Fwiw, the best cuisine I have ever enjoyed has been in Japan (have been there 3 times). Just incredible. Close second: India - but I've only been there one time for a short while and unfortunately it was recommended to not try the street foot in case you don't have a day or two to silently cure the initial "body reactions" in a darkened hotel room /w a decent sanitary situation..., so I had to stick with the safer takes, but it's been just glorious. Maybe almost a tie with India: The USA, or rather all the mexican fast food. Can't tell how much I just love burritos, rolled tacos and what not. We just don't have any of that here.
The worst service and worst food I’ve ever had out was the USA hands down. But I’m sure you could easily find similar anywhere.
Same in London.Mexico provided both the best food and the worst food I've ever had.
Worst food consistently…Germany…bland and greasy. The worst service and worst food I’ve ever had out was the USA hands down. But I’m sure you could easily find similar anywhere.

That made Mumbai or Hong Kong a walk in the park. And I don’t mean the tourist-y bits
