Chicago Music Exchange-ing

I went there with my daughter and wife recently. Being the PRS fanboy, I went straight to the PRS section and found this really beautiful guitar with pink accents. I took a quick glimpse at the tag and I thought it was $1,600+. It played really nice, everything felt right. The quality was exemplary!

I checked the price tag again, and it was actually...

I saw that one on the top row (iirc). I didnt look too close obviously but thought it was the cheap version and wondered why it was up top

That is bad-ass! Not sure about the price though. 😂

Speaking of pricey PRS's...

When I went to Chuck Levin's to buy a 7-string, they had this gorgeous work of art rotating in a glass case:

$16,425! Who buys that? Blues lawyers don't play 7 strings, afaik.

And even at that price, they still won't buy wider neck blanks so they don't have to glue on those little edge pieces!

Metal lawyers are a thing!

Shit, if I were to go to one of these gigantic awesome stores with actual good instruments, I'd need to bring an extra set of pants and 5 more hours

Do blues lawyers actually play the guitars they purchase?
I've been friends with my boss since I met him from a 'drummer wanted' ad in the early 80's. He's a great drummer, but due to his love of music, and trying at all costs to keep his band afloat from the various personnel changes, he's played keys and bass too. And at one point, we had a 3-piece band, that then turned into an acoustic trio, so he picked up guitar. He's just ok.

But he's definitely in the higher end of financial stability, having been a home improvement contractor for decades, so he collects guitars to hang on his wall at home.

When I told him I'd bought a new 7-string, he goes, "Geez, how many is that now?"

I'm like, "LESS THAN YOU HAVE!"

"Oh yeah, I guess you're right."

That's a whole lotta ugly right there!

I looked in there but acoustics have never been my bag (which is all that was ij the closed off play room). It's definitely a cool spot.
There is at least one if not two small rooms (closet size) that you can take electrics into and plug them into amps they have in those rooms. The one I played in is about 15 feet from the entrance to the acoustic room (which I was not referring to). Anyway, glad you went, worth a visit IMO if you are ever in Chi town (and as mentioned, ready to deal with parking hoo ha). Also, not sure if you ventured, but bass guitars are downstairs, as is the tech shop where they swapped out a bad pot on the Gretsch I purchased ;~))

Ahh i thought you were talking about the acoustic room. I did look in the small amp closets but nothing in there spoke to me. A room with Uberschalls, Rectos, Marks, JVMs and Diezels? YES PLEASE.
2nd pic...Tele , P90's (minus the Bigsby) looks sweet!.

Just noticed the Suhr Tele's for more traditional look.
Lots of great Fenders and Fender style stuff. I grabbed a couple of different Suhrs down purposely and was strangely unimpressed for the price?

All of the post COVID pricing is just...Stupid.

Yes I get inflation, but even if it were slightly justifiable before for pretty/more exotic wood to about 3500 top end, above that price without a new design idea that is functionally useful just doesn't interest me these days.

Maybe it's because I'm getting closer to retirement and I'm thinking more solid color finish on my guitars. Hardtail hipshot preferred and HH config - get that damn center pickup out of my way. I already have a SSH Strat for that.

Don't even get me started on volume knob jammed up too close the bridge pickup on so many models.

SAME!!!!

EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAVE PLAYED A SUHR, I HAVE BEEN VERY UNDERWHELMED, relative to how much they cost and how much guys talk about them.

Fit, finish and quality? Sure. Suhr is at the top of the heap, but honestly, so is Kiesel and PRS in that regard, so, that isn't limited to just Suhr.

Zero. Excitement. I'd buy a Fender all day every day if I wanted a Fender style. The Suhr RL however is great.
