Best speaker for a Friedman BE-100

Jon’s videos are actually informative and excellent to watch - I disagree that its spam
He hardly ever posts anything here but to “spam” his channel unlike other YouTube creators like Leon who actually posts as other members here do and doesn’t treat it as just a place to dump videos in order to try and get clicks. I think it’s supremely lame but see it as you wish.

If you like his videos just subscribe and watch them. It’s what he’s trying for with these posts anyway.

Out of curiosity what do you learn from his “information” that actually impacts your playing or gear purchase choices?

His amp shootout vids are top notch imo - I used them when I was looking for a lunchbox style amp, and his videos provided me with enough insight into the tones coming out of them for the kind of music I like. His videos on the Mark V 35 amp helped me in the beginning stages of when I first bought it. I like that he talks less and plays more too. I already am subscribed!

Impacting my playing? Nah his channel isn’t a guitar lesson channel, but if I’m hunting down an amp or pedal and I see that Jon has a video on it, I’ll watch it 🤷‍♂️ I don’t have the money to buy 7 amps to compare in my house, and there’s no way you’ll get an accurate picture of what an amp can do in a guitar shop.

Cool glad they were useful to you. I don’t find any gear demos useful because I’ve so many times gotten something that sounded good in a demo online and when I got in my space with my amps, cabs, and my hands…. it wasn’t for me. As always see it as you wish and so will I.

While I understand the sentiment that gives rise to your frustration, given the overwhelming explosion of the YouTube “review” influencer phenomenon there are clearly a significant number of folks whom find the reviews either informative or entertaining.

Jon is active in his threads here. At least he’s not just dumping and running. Calling out spam feels like it’s coming from a good place but this instance feels perhaps slightly miscalibrated.

Im not frustrated but other forums have rules where it’s specific part of the forum for sellers and influencers to post. There’s a reason. Anyhow, I don’t see him ever participating in any thread topic that isn’t one that he created and then it’s mostly “thanks” or a brief statement. It’s obvious his only intention is to get potential clicks. That’s lame and I poke fun at it is all.

To echo what others have said, at least Jon follows up in his threads. I do agree though, they come off a bit spammy sometimes, but I'm no ytube "influencer" and it's not necessarily a world I want to fully understand so that people can continue to stay engaged in your content. But you have to put yourself out there to get momentum, simple as that.

Anybody wanna talk about amps and speakers? :)
I'd take any of the other speakers over the V30 tbh, for low to high gain tones. I say this as someone that's owned a pair going on 25 yrs. Believe it or not though, I like the V30 with cleans. Go figure!

It's always interesting to me when people say they don't like the V30. In all seriousness, when you listen to say, 80% of all rock music, does that sound really annoy you? Or just when you're playing through them yourself? Maybe this is a more general question for people who dislike V30s though.

Luckily in my recent mega shootout there were plenty of really good non V30 speakers in there. The Amperians often come to mind for a balanced sound with full mids and less spikey upper mids.

I think it has more to do with my own personal experience playing them, but also in your side by side I find the V30 a bit too forward for my tastes as well. Like I said, I used them clean in a Twin Reverb for a long while and they did great for that and slight eob to overdrive tones. But for higher gain I just don't like them as much, but I can see where guys with heavier styles and palm muting may dig them more. I do realize it's been used in countless recordings, but in 80% of all rock? Very doubtful and not exactly provable. But as you know, there are many other factors that come along with a song and post processing to shape things anyways.

Yeah, 80% was just an extremely rough guesstimate haha, but a large portion of modern rock at least!

I have gone through many love/hate phases with V30’s. What I have learned is that they are not all the same and the derivative ones are only maybe similar but not the same. For instance I have a pair of Eminence CV-75’s that are ok but they don’t sound like V30’s to me. When V30’s work, they are amazing and possibly one of the best stage speakers for rock ever made.

There’s not really a best, it’s versatile to work with loads of speakers and cabs and everyone will have their preference. Dave typically uses v30’s and g12m25’s in the Friedman cabs and I think they pair well. Blackbacks and cream backs and T75’s have been cool too. I just don’t see how one combination is “best” on an amp that has so many modes and switches.

They bother me way more when playing by myself, or at low volume. Loud and in a mix, they do cut through in a good way.

I think it depends on what amp you pair with them too. My Mesa Mark V can be dialed just fine to work with them, but with my Amp 1 Mercury I prefer Greenbacks by a mile. Amp 1 Iridium works fine with V30s.

I have Chinese V30s of unknown age in my Bluetone 2x12 and they definitely don't sound quite like I remember e.g the Bogner Goldfinger combo's V30 sounding, or the 2x12 cab I had back in the day. The Bogner's V30 did the poster child "annoyingly spiky upper mids" thing.
