Baritone, 7 string or 7 string baritone?

So it looks like, bit by bit; my wrestling metal thing is coming together. I have the Boss XS100 for down-tuning that will hopefully work good enough for the task at hand.I have a 6 string I will keep in standard and I am looking at either a 7 string or a baritone. Or a 7 string baritone to do the truly chonky chonks

:bag

Most of the stuff is either Korn tuning in A (which I will most likely transpose up to B as long as it sounds good) or drop C/C# so between these two and maybe a single step down; I'll have it covered. I am currently debating whether I want to grab a baritone and live with 6 strings or if I want to take a leap of online faith and get a 7 string.

Baritone=longer scale, THICK strings
7 string=Wider neck and the extra string I kind of can't seem to wrap my head around. There apparently are 7 string baritones as well. Ooof.

Any thoughts on what makes more sense given what I want to do? I am going to grab something no matter if the WWF band never materializes as I have wanted something for uber heavies anyway.

I’m going to suggest a 7-string because ya might end up needing that high E (or D) depending on which Korn/Limp Bizkit songs make their way into the set. A is as low as I’ll go on one, after that it’s a mess of figuring out which gauge strings to use and opening tuner/nut slots to accommodate the thicker strings.

In the spirit of what you’re doing, there really couldn’t be a better choice than an RG7620. I know you hate Floyds, but it might be tricky pulling off some of those Korn tunes without a trem. The fixed bridge version is the RG7621. Whatever you do, if you get a 7 with a Floyd, don’t get the RG7420, it has the cheap Floyd that’ll make your life hell (which I think is the 7-string version of the LoTRS you have on your yellow Ibanez).

Munky’s current sig model looks pretty sick, I’m pretty certain it’s an Indo but it at least has the LoPro7 with the U-bar instead of a standard whammy bar and it’s got an ebony board. At this price ($1999) I’d just go with a Solar, though.

This is my first time seeing the U-bar. Pretty clever. I wonder if it would get in the way of my typical picking technique, though.

I saw that Munky sig and was very intrigued. I did wonder how my normal palm resting/muting techniques would go with that thing in the way though  I was looking Solar's Amazon store yesterday :roflOrdering from them direct right now would SUCK because "extra fees":hmm

...and my on the spectrum about fret markers problem

Schecter 7's are fantastic. The 26.5" scale is a really good balance of tension vs. ease of playing, IMO.
The original Schecter I had decades ago that Drew talked about in whatever other thread that was was a HUGE turnoff. I really have to get past that. They do sell on Amazon as well :whistle I am cool with Esp LTD as well at this point? I'd like something that would be ready to play out of the box if possible.

My hand pretty much stays anchored between the top of the bridge/below the bridge pickup so I don’t think it’d be an issue in my case, but if you generally keep it lower than that I could see it getting in the way. The inserts are exactly the same as a regular LoPro/Edge whammy, so it could always be removed and a regular whammy bar stuck in the slot. You can even do the SRV lefty trem thing due to the 2 insert holes!

The Keith Merrow 7 Schecter I played was pretty sick!! Comparable neck to the RG7/Universe in that it’s flat instead of being a round baseball bat like those old Schecters.

Very clever indeed.

This is a lesser-of-2-evils situation for me because I hate scale lengths over 25.5” but a 7 string always feels like a compromise between making the low B sound terrible or making the high E sound terrible… I don’t think I’ve ever played a 7 string where I thought both sounded good.

But. One nice thing about a 7 string is you won’t have to change guitars as much during a show because you could cover most of what you would use a 6 string for with the same guitar. As opposed to a baritone where you’ll have to change guitars between songs.

So my vote would be 7 string

Interesting. I was not aware of that? This project probably isn't going to get off the ground so I am kind of just talking myself off that ledge and using this as an excuse to get something for the heavies.

I greatly prefer playing a baritone 6 string over a 7 string, but there are just some songs and styles that are really hard to pull off convincingly without a 7 string.

My Schecter 7-string is 26.5 and lives tuned to B. Never bothered going lower because I don’t want to play any lower than that. :ROFLMAO:

I vote a baritone 7 string, or at least 26.5” scale. 25.5” 7 strings (in my opinion) don’t do it for me

That’s always been my problem with 7 strings. I think the low B doesn’t sound great until around 26.5”, but I think the high E/B strings sound terrible on anything over 25.5”. So it’s always a compromise one way or the other.

It’s a trade off, I like to use string tension calculators to figure out my ideal setup, and Stringjoy has been a godsend for me in that regard.

I will say @JiveTurkey that the Dunlop Korn string set on a 26.5” or 27” guitar tuned to A standard is the sweet spot for me. Then you can play Death too since you’ve got D standard right there.

And LB riffs on a 6 string and have it be close enough to C# standard to not be that big of a deal for the singer
