Yeah, ok. With over 10,000 applicants, there's certainly more than just hard work and perseverance at play here. And I'm not talking about looks, or that their choice is female. It's just that with that much competition, you can do all those other things for many, many years, and never "get there."
It's always been a gamble to try to make it in music, but today I'm sure it's harder than its ever been.

I saw Smashing Pumpkins in 2012 in San Francisco. They played great, but honestly Billy Corgan was a bit full of himself even on stage.
Never heard of Kiki Wong, but good for her for getting that gig! I hope the other half of the job isn't managing Corgan's ego. Nevertheless, should be a good springboard for her career.
As for looks...looks never hurt. Whether you are a guy or gal, looking good and having charisma on stage matters. Billy Corgan may look like young Baron Harkonnen, but that's also a look that says rock n' roll. Women just get judged much more harshy on looks and that just sucks.
We didn't talk about how slutty Teemu Mäntysaari looked like when he joined Megadeath. I mean just look at this obscene outfit with way too many shirt buttons undone! He might as well join the Village People if he's showing that much forearm!
