Anyone else preferring “produced” sounds?

I like movie popcorn and I like steak dinners. I don’t want either all the time.

But the argument about the situation driving the sound is spot on.
I’ve been playing for a church band for years as the only electric guitarist plugged directly into FOH, enjoying my lush reverbs and delays. Yesterday we finally had a second guitarist join with good skills and gear. Immediately everything got dialed back.

That said, I once dared to suggest that his tone works so well in his context precisely because he plays as a “solo” artist,
Andy works in a wide variety of contexts. For example, he was Olivia Newton-John's touring MD (my friend and past gig-mate Alison Prestwood played bass with him in that band), and on occasion he plays at clubs here in North Texas along with world-class rhythm section players. I've also seen him play a guitar duo with Jason Bucklin, from whom we were both taking lessons at the time. He was least at home in that last context, choosing to play his eponymous Ibanez Strat-like guitar.

All I do is plug a modeler into a guitar cab (with cab models disabled) and I have perfect 'raw' sounds for live playing. I then send another signal with IR (processed) to FOH.

Best of both worlds. It's not complicated.
I have a bank of Helix presets where I split and send effects out to my 2204, and then route the other side to a full amp model and IR for FOH. It works well.
